Celebrated African actors Okanayo Okanayo, Ramsey Noah and Lydia Forson are among top notch African filmmakers who arrived in South Africa today  for  the 2014 edition of Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAAs).

This year’s award is the 10th anniversary of the AMAAs and it promises to be eventful to reecho standards in African movies.

The only award on the African continent which targets the Diaspora is generally aimed at honouring African talents while projecting Africa to the world at large.

The nominations party is taking place  tonight at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg, South Africa with a lot of expectations.

The Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), Africa’s most prestigious awards for filmmakers, receives 328 entries from across Africa, up from 220 in 2011. Nomination night is 17 March 2012 in Banjul, Gambia.
The Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), the continent’s most prestigious awards for filmmakers, has received 328 entries from across Africa, up from 220 in 2011. This includes 134 feature films, 88 short films, 57 documentaries and six animations. 43 entries came from Africans in the Diaspora, with the other entries coming from 23 countries across the continent, including Ghana.
Dr. Asantewa Olantunji, Director Of Programming of The Pan African Film Festival, headed this year’s jury, which included June Giavanni, programmer for Planet Africa At The Toronto International Film Festival; Keith Shiri, Founder and Film Curator at the London Festival, Africa at The Pictures; Dorothee Wenner, a curator at The Berlin Film Festival; Shaibu Husseini, an actor, dancer and The Nigerian Guardian arts journalist;  Steve Ayorinde, editor-in-chief of The Daily Mirror;  Ayoko Babu, Executive Director of The Pan African Film Festival; Dr. Hyginus Ekwuazi, a film scholar and critic; and directors Berni Goldblat and John Akomfrah, OBE.

The Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) is calling for feature, short and documentary entries for its 2012 edition, to be held in April in Nigeria, home to the world’s third largest film industry. The deadline for submissions is 30 December 2011.

Since its inception in 2005, AMAA has established itself as the most prestigious and glamorous awards celebrating filmmaking on the continent. The gala event, which is televised live around the world, attracts Hollywood celebrities alongside their African counterparts, as well as African politicians and media.

The newly crowned Africa Movie Academy Awards 2011 Best Actress In A Lead Role Ama K. Abebrese wasn’t present in Bayelsa State, Nigeria to collect her statuette. It was collected on her behalf by a rep from Ghana. Finally, the actress had the opportunity to hold and kiss her award when it was presented to her today in Ho, Volta Region where she is busily shooting her new movie ‘Ties That Bind’ with Leila Djansi.

Ama K. Abebrese was adjudged as the Best Actress in Africa for her role in Leila Djansi’s movie ‘Sinking Sands’. The actress whose role in the movie was her first major role was picked ahead of her colleagues in a tight category which comprises of Nollywood heavyweights Genevieve Nnaji (Tango With Me), Omoni Oboli (Anchor Baby) and Idiat Shobande (Aramotu) as well as Congolese Manie Malone (Viva Riva) and South African Denise Newman (Shirley Adams).
