MUST READ: Ghana, The Country Where Common Sense Is As Scarce As Hen’s Teeth

map of Ghana
map of Ghana

If you are not aware of the state of affairs in Ghana or have bought into the gobbledygook  propaganda being paraded by the few ‘chopping down’ the little money the economy is hanging on, let me take you down a short route of truth.

As at now, Ghana has no electricity and with this, I mean certain urban places go for 5 days without power. Small businesses such as Cold Stores which fully depend on electricity have been forced to close down.

Don’t tell me the businesses should get a generator because the Government has unconscionably increased fuel prices in the midst of the power crisis.

Secondly, despite the many water bodies we have in Ghana, living in Accra as at now is far worse than living on the Sahara desert. My auntie has to buy several ‘unclean barrels’ of water each week to keep the household going.

And if you think the above is outrageous, I bet you have not heard of the unavailability of gas and the galloping inflation which has set in on basic commodities. Even gari has doubled in price and you know what that means-students are as hungry as hell.

If it was only the above problems, I would have said; Ghana is in difficulties which would soon be solved.

Every country has its own dark days since NO where is ‘cool’. However, things in Ghana have become greater than mere difficulty as the basis of thinking and problem solving techniques-COMMON SENSE is lacking.

In the face of the above problems, the Government of Ghana is paying to fly 200 Ghanaians from the Christian Community on a pilgrimage to Israel.

State Of The Nation’s Address From My Lenses…Why Ghana Is Politically, ‘Entertainmently’, Fashionally & Economically Crippled

Ghanaian Celebrities2

Copying is a trademark of Ghanaians, from atrocious dressing to atrocious entertainment. Since we as a nation have taken the bold decision not to be creative in some areas of development, why don’t we be just as bold to copy what will develop a nation? Comparison is in line with copying, so I’m allowed to compare, isn’t it?

Political:

When it comes to politics in Ghana, it is very disheartening. Many politicians talk and react to issues like they have never stepped foot in a classroom, and the unfortunate thing is some of them are well traveled and very educated.

Who is a President/politician accountable to? Where does his responsibility lie?, His family, coffers or people who elected him into power? Does an MP even know what is happening in his constituency?

Politicians were humiliated (and some even jailed) just for claiming some expenses in the UK (pardon me for using UK). In Ghana, who questions thoroughly where and what monies are used for?

Everything done or said is firmly planted on tribalism. If you say anything, either you’re a Ga, Ewe or Ashanti, one cannot even express a point without being attached to a tribe. Instead of allowing appropriate authorities to deal with any issues regarding politics and politicians, excuse me to say, jobless people who are waiting on the government to feed and clothe them wait outside wielding weapons (just yesterday), to beat who?

A word can jeopardize someone’s political ambition in the West, but in my dear Ghana, unfortunate words are traded each day. Politicians make promises and overlook what the nation needs most.

Some media houses make it worse by given certain politicians vibrant platforms to call people names. I may be in the dark, but do we have a Communication Regulatory Body in Ghana?

Entertainment:

We are now into reality TV shows, no problem! Since that idea was copied from the West, why don’t we put a proper entertainment structure in place as they also have? MUSIGA is doing wonders with the music industry, I cannot say the same about the Movie/Theatre with confidence.

Just a handful of people (two if you ask me), are really striving to make the Movie Industry worth anything. Do we even have a proper Actors, Directors, Scriptwriters and Producers Guilds? (I’m not taking about the same people crippling it with trash movies), I mean proper associations or unions, whereby, all the Actors and Actresses who are day dreaming of going to HOLLYWOOD belong.

What is MUSIGA doing so right, that the others are getting it completely wrong? Is it the leadership or lack of vision?

Fashion:

Thankfully, there is no dress maker in Ghana anymore, we now have Fashion designers. Since we are copying the West, why don’t we learn that a designer can sue you if you ‘steal’ his/her design? One idea and the whole lot will flood to that gate! What happened to uniqueness?

While one is creating this, the other can create another thing, and then the market will be beautifully bigger with a difference. Very soon, every designer will be their own consumer since every is producing the same thing.

Education/Employment:

Teaching Entrepreneurial and Apprenticeship in Tertiary level will go a long way to help. As Africans, we are always brought up with the idea of getting qualifications to work in some office. Nobody taught us to study and become our own boss. People going into entrepreneurship will go a long way to deflate the number of people seeking employment. The attitude in Ghana is; my job equals my qualification!

Currency:

When I came to England to continue my education, I don’t remember my mother paying my fees in cedis! My point is, why should a country which has its own currency be charging fees in dollars! I may be wrong, but undermining your own currency is definitely going to devalue it. Everything is dollar! It is even fashionable to tell someone that ‘My child goes to a dollar charging school’.

Finally, waiting for this political party or that political party to come into power before you become well-off is the language/attitude of a lazy man. ‘If NDC was in power, if NPP was in power………all the time’.

Have You Heard This: Ghana Among World's 10 Worst Economies In The World According To Forbes Magazine

blankGhana has the world’s largest manmade lake and the 1-gigawatt Aksombo Hydroelectric Plant, built to supply electricity to Africa’s largest aluminum smelter. But the smelter has been idle since 2009, a casualty of low aluminum prices and persistent electricity shortages that have forced the government to divert the power elsewhere.
Ghana is a typical example of the world’s worst-managed economies: It’s a country that shouldn’t be poor, but it is. The West African nation’s gross domestic product per capita fell 9% last year to $621, ranking it 154th out of 184 countries tracked by the International Monetary Fund, below resource-impoverished Haiti. With a $3 billion trade deficit last year and $4.9 billion in external debt, Ghana is struggling to pay its bills even as it sits on some of the world’s biggest reserves of gold and bauxite, as well as considerable amounts of offshore oil, which is being developed by Anadarko Petroleum ( APC – news – people ) and others.
“Ghana’s problems are mostly homegrown,” said Peter Allum, the IMF’s mission chief to Ghana, in February. Forbes ranks Ghana ninth on our list of the world’s worst economies.
As the world focuses on Greece and the rest of the so-called PIIGs–Portugal, Italy and Ireland–in their fight to reverse years of irresponsible fiscal policies, another group of nations make them look positively well-managed. Forbes screened IMF data for countries that have low and declining per-capita GDP, high trade deficits and high inflation, all indicators of bad economic management regardless of the country’s inherent wealth.
All have at least one trait in common: Their governments discourage private investment–and economic growth–through policies of crony capitalism, expropriation or arbitrary enforcement of the laws. That makes it hard to generate hard currency to pay off government debt and discourages citizens from investing in education to improve their own economic lot.

Ghana Misses Penalty Against Zambia: Asamoah Gyan Fingered … ‘He Was In A Hurry To Dance’ Says Sports Analyst!

blank
Asamoah Gyan dancing after scoring at the World Cup in South Africa

Ghana’s Black Stars failed in their bid to qualify to the finals of the 2012 African Cup of Nations as they lost by a late goal to the Zambians in the first Semi Finals match of the on-going AFCON in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
The resilient Zambia’s inspirational goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene climbed to the occasion to save an Asamoah Gyan penalty in the early part of the first half. The Zambian goal was scored by substitute Emmanuel Mayuka with just 12 minutes remaining to end the match.
The lost means Ghana will play in the third place match against the Malians who also lost by a lone goal against the tournament favourites; Ivory Coast in the second Semi Finals. Even though the Ghanaians defeated the Malians by two goals to nil in the group stages, the Malians would be a tough nut to crack this time around as they would not allow Ghana to beat them twice in the same tournament.
Many Ghanaians as well as soccer analysts are commenting on the missed chances by the Ghanaians to qualify to the finals. Jerry Kwame Ayensu like many others believes, the Zambian game was a match that the Ghanaians played very well and yet had to lose because of the failed chances.
Even though Ghana created as many chances, the team failed to convert any including Asamoah Gyan’s missed penalty kick.
“I think this was the best game of the tournament by Ghana after creating nine clear chances and missing a penalty. We just have been riding our luck all throughout the tournament but this gives us the opportunity to scour the market very well for the very best of playing materials as we lacked the materials for this tournament at some point.”

Out Of Box Story: 45 Ghanaians deported from Nigeria…What The Heck!

I cannot even count the number of Anagos currently parading their arrogance on the streets of Ghana without any problem. Ghanaians have hospitality and have welcomed Nigerians as brothers and sisters.

How come Nigerians are being hostile to the few Ghanaians who have found their way into their country? Gosh…Read below for more

…………………………………………………………………………………………

Another batch of 21 Ghanaians has been deported from Nigeria, bringing the number so far deported on the orders of Nigerian two state governors to 45.

The Nigerian High Commissioner in Accra, Mohammed Musiliu Obanikoro, has however frowned upon the action, promising to wade into it immediately.

Earlier on July 14, 2011, 24 Ghanaians were arrested and deported to Ghana – unable to pick their belongings before the unexpected action. The batch was made up of 21 men, 2 women and a girl.

In both instances, the deportations were ordered by state governors in the most populous African country which runs a federal system in which foreign affairs, defence and internal affairs are the preserves of the federal government in Abuja.

Details available to Daily Guide suggest that the latest bout of deportation saw the rounding up of 21 persons upon the orders of the Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, in Western Nigeria.

The deportees were arrested on July 16, 2011 and kept in confinement without allowing them to pick their belongings until their final forced exit from Nigeria a few days ago.

With the thought of leaving their belongings behind pinching them, the deportees were taken to the Nigeria/Benin border by road and handed over to the immigration authorities of that country.

The Beninois authorities then moved the deportees to their country’s border with Togo, Hilla Kondji, from where they were transported to the Togo/Ghana border of Aflao and handed over to Ghanaian authorities.

Daily Guide learnt that the deportees at this point were handed over to National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Ketu North District of the Volta Region.
