All too soon, the AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) has finally arrived. In less than 24 hours, deserving winners would be announced. Looking at it, the award is here to stay for good.

It’s another opportunity for movie makers, doers and shakers of the African cinema to converge at one venue in Lagos, the heart of African movies to celebrate their achievements over the past few years.

African Cinema has come a long way and needs to be celebrated in grand style and this is what is going to be done tomorrow, March 9 at the Eko Suites Hotels.

GhanaCelebrities.Com has been selected to cover this year’s awards and yesterday, a representative touched down at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Nigeria with other Ghanaian celebrities to be part of the awards ceremony.

We will therefore bring you all the excitement from Lagos…Stick with us for all the exclusive reports, interviews and photos (You know how we go in for it all…).

The atmosphere at the airport yesterday as aircrafts that conveyed reps from other African countries touched down was exceptional. Celebrities and nominees had a tough time at the airport as onlookers [and some officials at the airport] try to steal every opportunity to snap photos with the Africa movie stars.

AMVCA nominee  in the ‘Best Actress in a Drama’ category-Jackie Appiah who was in a company of her manager Samira Yakubu, actor and movie producer, Roger Quartey and Majid Michel had a tough time getting through the crowd at the airport.

As the actress stepped out to take photos after photos with the teeming fans, the look on her face was that of someone who was probably thinking of how best to beat off the challenge of her other nominees in the category which will be keenly contested between Bubu Mazibuko, Nolwazi Shange and Nollywood’s heavyweights Genevieve Nnaji and Funke Akindele.

Still at the airport, I asked if she was confident that she would win. She sighed, waited a while and murmured with a smile. She said “Ebenezer, it’s going to be tough”.

With two nominations in the ‘Best Sound Editor’ category, rapper E.L. appeared very sober at the airport as most of the people didn’t really know who he was. Just like Jackie Appiah, E.L. might be wondering how he can possibly go back to Ghana with one of the two awards from the movies ‘Perfect Picture’ and ‘A Sting In A Tale’.

The smile on the faces of other nominees and invited guests of AMVCA shows their readiness and high expectation for the maiden edition of the awards.

Over 26 categories to be awarded to both on-the-screen and behind-the-screen professionals on Saturday and Africa can’t wait for this great day.

The AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards will be screened LIVE to over 50 countries on the African continent, on DStv starting at 19:00 CAT with an exciting, live, one-hour red carpet pre-show to be hosted by Denrele Edun, Helen Paul, Uti Nwachukwu, Dolapo Oni and Eku Edewor (53 Extra), Lawrence Maleka (StarGist) plus Nic Wang’ondu and Sarah Hassan (Mashariki Mix).
