Did the organizers of the African Movie Academy Award preconceived this year’s edition of the awards is all going to be about Ghana? I don’t think so but the reality is that Ghana tops with 11 nominations.
This year’s could possibly be the turning point for Ghana. 500 movies were submitted to be considered for the African Movie Academy Awards, the number was trimmed down to 280 movies among those are 5 Ghanaian movies in serious contention.
‘I Sing of a well’ tops the nominations with 11, Shirley Frimpong Manso’s ‘Perfect Picture’ and ‘A Sting in A tale’ had 8 and 3 nominations respectively. The pointless controversial movie ‘Heart of Men’ had 5 nominations.
Lydia Forson was nominated with Jackie Appiah and Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku in their roles in Sparrow Production’s ‘Perfect Picture’ in the category ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role’ alongside Akofa Edjeani Asiedu with the movie ‘I sing of a well’. All these actresses expressed their joy at the nominations to GhanaCelebrities.com
Lydia Forson said “We just have to give thanks to God, I am really excited”.
Asked if that’s all she can say, she said with smiles “I mean if I have to give thanks to God, who else? Yes am excited, that’s why am giving thanks to God. You do a lot of hard work and you pray that someone recognizes you and when they do, am very humble, probably am not shouting but I have my own way of expressing myself, am really humble”.
Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku in the hub of her excitement said “I am very happy I was nominated, am very thankful to everybody who was here to support us”.
“To the Ghanaian audience, they were very supportive to all the Ghanaian nominations, we want to thank you a lot and we hope and pray we bring the awards to Ghana this year”.
Majid Michel was nominated from the movie ‘Sin of a soul” for the ‘Best Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role’ alongside his compatriot John Osei Tutu Agyeman for a role in ‘I Sing of a well’.
Seated close to his beautiful wife, Majid said in a low tone “I feel very proud, my competitors are very strong, I just hope this one takes a good turn”.
Asked about his chances of winning the award, he said “That’s up to the judges, you can never tell”.
Jackie Appiah said this year is her second year running in the AMAA and it can only get better for her.
