Below are the various categories and category description. Ghana Music Awards 2010 is slated for the Accra International Conference Centre on the 10th April, 2010.

The categories to be voted by the general public are:

A. Most Popular Song of the Year

The Most Popular Song of the Year is the song adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the most popular song commercially released in the year under review. The song must have enjoyed a lot of airplay both off and on radio and generated the most excitement during the year.

B. Artiste(s) of the Year

The Artiste of the Year is the song adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the artiste(s) with the highest audience appeal, best stage craft and popularity. The Artiste(s) must have commercially released single/album during the year under review.

C. Discovery of the Year

The Discovery of the Year is the Artiste(s) adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the artiste(s) most promising and talented new artiste(s). The award goes to the artiste(s) who made most impact with his/her first commercial release (single/Album) during the year under review.

D. Hiplife/Hip Hop Artiste(s) of the Year

The Hiplife/Hip Hop Artiste of The Year is the highest Hiplife Artiste(s) adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the artiste(s) with the highest audience appeal, best stage craft and popularity. The artiste(s) must have commercially released a hit single/album during the year under review.

E. Gospel Artiste(s) of the Year

The Gospel Artiste of the year is the Gospel Artiste(s) adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the artiste(s) with the highest audience appeal, best stage craft and popularity. The artiste(s) must have commercially released a hit single/album during the year under review.

F. Gospel Song of the Year

The Gospel song of the year is the song adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the most popular Gospel Song commercially released a hit single/album during the year under review. The song must have enjoyed a lot of airplay both off and on radio and generated the most excitement during the year.

G. Hip Hop Song of the Year

The Hip Hop Song of the Year is the song adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the most popular Hip Hop Song commercially released a hit single/album during the year under review. The song must have enjoyed a lot of airplay both off and on radio and generated the most excitement during the year.

H. Hiplife Song of the Year

The Hiplife Song of the Year is the song adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the most popular Hiplife Song commercially released a hit single/album during the year under review. The song must have enjoyed a lot of airplay both off and on radio and generated the most excitement during the year.

I. Afro-Pop Song of the Year

The Afro-Pop Song of the Year is the song adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the most popular Afro-Pop Song by a Ghanaian. The song is a cross pollination of music genres, must have enjoyed a lot of airplay both off and on radio and generated the most excitement during the year under review.

J. Reggae Song of the Year

The Reggae Song of the Year is the song adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the most popular Reggae Song commercially released in the year under review. The song must have enjoyed a lot of airplay both off and on radio and generated the most excitement during the year.

K. Highlife Song Of The Year

The Hihlife Song of the Year is the song adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the most popular Highlife Song commercially released in the year under review. The song must have enjoyed a lot of airplay both off and on radio and generated the most excitement during the year.

L. Highlife Artiste(S) Of The Year

The Highlife Artiste(S) Of the Year is the Artiste adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the Artiste(s) with the highest audience appeal, best stage craft and popularity. The Artiste(s) must have commercially released in the year under review. The song must have enjoyed a lot of airplay both off and on radio and generated the most excitement during the year.

M. Best Collaboration Of The Year

The best collaboration of the Year is the song adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the song produced through the collaboration/featuring of two or more Artistes. The song must have commercially released in the year under review. The song must have enjoyed a lot of airplay both off and on radio and generated the most excitement during the year.

N. African Artiste(s) Of The Year

The African Artiste(s) of the Year is the Artiste adjudged by the Selection Committee, Planning Committee and the general public as the Artiste(s) with the highest audience appeal, best stage craft and popularity. The artiste must have commercially released a hit Single/Album during the year under review.

The Industry Categories

O. Album of the Year

The Album of the Year is the Album adjudged by the Selection and Planning Committees as the most outstanding compilation of original songs on an album that was commercially released during the year under review. It may not have enjoyed huge commercial success, but has quality artistic value.

P. Best Male vocal performance (Solo/Group)

The Best Male vocal performance award is adjudged by the Selection and Planning Committees as the male artiste (solo/group) with the best vocal delivery on any musical presentation which was commercially released during the year under review.

Q. Best Female vocal performance (Solo/Group)

The Best Female vocal performance award is adjudged by the Selection and Planning Committees as the female artiste (solo/group) with the best vocal delivery on any musical presentation which was commercially released during the year under review.

R. Best Music Video of the Year

The Best Music Video is adjudged by the Selection and Planning Committees as the most creative and entertaining music video for any song commercially released during the year under review.

S. Songwriter of the Year

The Song Writer of the Year is adjudged by the Planning and Selection Committees as the Song Writer(s) responsible for the song with the most meaningful and original lyrics and compositions for any commercially released song during the year under review.

T. Record Label of the Year

The Record label of the year award goes to the Record label with the highest number of nominees/winners. The Record Label must have commercially released at least two artistes in the year under review.

U. Producer of the Year

The Producer of the Year award goes to the producer(s) directly responsible (creatively) for the production of the highest number of commercially released award-winning songs/winners during the year under review.

V. Traditional Artiste(s) of the Year

The Traditional Artiste(s) of the year is adjudged by the Selection and Planning Committees as the most popular Traditional or Folkloric Artiste(s) in the year under review.

W. Record of the Year

The Record of the Year is adjudged by the Planning Committee as the most outstanding original song that was commercially released during the year under review. It may not have enjoyed huge commercial success, but has quality artistic value.

X. Instrumentalist of the Year

The Instrumentalist of the Year is an honorary award presented to the Instrumentalist who performed creditably on a number of hit songs that were commercially released during the year under review. It is adjudged by the Planning Committee and awarded to the Instrumentalist who had the most influence on the music scene.
