Hollywood, Here They Come…Oops, Are They Fit Enough?

Idris Elba & Ama K Abebrese

It is not unusual to hear a Ghanaian actor or actress saying, I desire to step into Hollywood whenever questioned about what he or she wants to achieve within the movie industry.

It seems being Hollywood is the measuring rod used to ascertain the successfulness of an actor or an actress in the Ghanaian movie industry. What happens to our own Ghallywood then if all the best ones eventually make it to their dream land? Whether this is a good or bad concept, I’m not going to go into all that and will leave that for your own minds.

I have compiled my little list of potential Ghanaian actors and actresses who fall within the top ranking personalities and are actively targeting the ‘land of Milk and Honey’ – Hollywood.

Majid Michel: His acting dexterity is unquestionable and with years of playing various leading role in both the Ghanaian and Nigerian movie industry, his skills have been empowered by experience making him potential Hollywood material. But can he make it to the gigantic ‘wood’ which has more skilled and diverse individuals with extensive years of experience?

Nadia Buari: As much as I am not a big fan of Nadia Buari owning to several reasons and her stinking attitude, I cannot under any certain terms underrate her acting skills. She is a good actress and a screen diva but critics say, she has no screen emotions (emotionless on screen).

She has the looks but Hollywood is not all about looks, it’s also about skill and talent coupled with connections (who you know) and how good you can fit into the demanding and scandalous industry…lets call a spade a spade!

I would be proud to see home girl fetch up her Hollywood dreams but as a Ghanaian blogger, I am also wondering if she can cope with the unmerciful female Hollywood bloggers like Sandra Rose and Necole Bitchie.

We are all aware and see the severe scrutiny and pressure all those women are under to perform well and look good. In Hollywood it is a jungle and competition is fierce (survival of the fittest).

Is Nadia who is always at loggerheads with the less ferocious Ghanaian media ready to battle the big mouths in Hollywood and the all round paparazzis? As the saying goes ‘…be careful what you wish for, you just might get it…’

Should Nadia make it to Hollywood she will surely ask herself what she has let herself in for when she can’t even buy a hamburger at the local fast food joint without being called ‘fat’ or losing it’! We’ve all seen the American Media Articles…there is no mercy!

Ama K Abebrese: I have always admired the achievements of Ama K Abebrese and did enjoy her TV show on OBE TV in the UK. She seems to be taking acting full-time now after appearing in the movie -‘London Gets Problem’.

Ama’s acting experiences and features are not much to throw around but her recent upcoming movie with director Leila Djansi, ‘Sinking Sands’ featuring Hollywood actor Jimmy Jean Louis,  is tipped to be a good all break through movie.

As I stated above, Hollywood is not all about talent or skills, it is also about who you know (I guess now everything is not about what you know, but who you know).

When it comes to connections and who knows who in Hollywood, Ama K has got that at her finger tips but that alone is not enough right? She needs some acting skills and personality as well; does she have all this to take her to her dream land?

Van Vicker: The Ghana born, Nigerian resident with glamorous looks has been juggling his way both in the Ghanaian and Nigerian movie industry for some years now, until recently he jilted the former for the latter.

In my rightful opinion Van Vicker’s personality is a stunning one but when it comes to his acting skills, it is a no go area for any good movie lover and critic. I wonder how he has been able to stay in an industry such as Ghallywood and Nollywood without a talent or skill at all.

Many have suggested that, Van should quit acting and chase glamour modelling since he has the looks but not the talent. Whether you agree with this or not, I think Van has done well to carve for himself the fame and be able to strongly stay in both movie industries when he has no-talent at all.

Van Vicker has the personality but has he acquired the skills and connections to crack the Hollywood code?

Yvonne Nelson: Another excellent Ghanaian actress with the looks and the work ethic to take her to everywhere she desires but a stinking attitude to bring her back to where she started.

I guess the former Miss Ghana Beauty pageant contestant has recognised that skills and looks cannot alone take her to

Hollywood, she also needs the connections (contacts) to drift her there. A thorough make over in her attitude would not hurt either!

Recently, Yvonne Nelson was spotted hanging out with Hollywood actor John Littlefiled in Monrovia, Liberia. If Yvonne gets through with the concept of establishing strong Hollywood connections to pave way for her entry, is her acting skill, personality and attitude good enough to carry her legs to the actors dreamland-Hollywood?

Apart from the above, many other Ghanaian movie personalities aspire to become Hollywood stars. Many Ghanaians have already made it to Hollywood, notably Akosua Buasia, Idris Elba, Peter Mensah, Kofi Siriboe, Senyo Amoako, etc and many more will join the chain.

Which Ghanaian actor or actress do you consider as Hollywood material and can successfully fit in the there?

  2. My picks are going to be Majid, yvonne and Chris Attoh. Nadia is not cut for hollywood, shes not a good of an actress and she cant deal with all the drama that comes with being in hollwood. As for van, i really dont care how good hes done for himself in nollywood whatever, the boy cant act period, his looks is what is keeping him in the game, but when it comes to hollywood it takes talent to get u noticed and keep you working, boyfriend needs to sign up with a modeling agency, he will make a lot of mulah, lol,

  6. You have a useless list – obviously your eye for TALENT is absolutely crap – How in the hell do you come up such a foolish list and nothing gets on my nerves more than the VAN VICKER you put on the list. NOBODY ON THE LIST has a slight chance of even being a extra on a movie set, except maybe MAJID. GC and their damn so called writers. Tell me one excellent performance by any of these name actors or actress (excluding Majid who ofcoure is good) – The fact that you mentioned Van tells me your view for talent is crap crap crap

  11. For the guys, i shall go for Majid. He is cool, gentle and acts really well. For the ladies, it is Jackie for real. She has the looks, good body and acts really. These are the only people who has talents. The rest are just there. Those hating on gorgeous Jackie should know that it doest make them any better, moreover, Hollywood isn’t for only the too tall and slim people. Douchebags should get a life and stop those silly envies.
