Leila Djansi & Socrate Sarfo In Fierce Battle: Leila Threatens To Withdraw “Sinking Sands” From GMA & Says She Won’t Be Surprised If She Is Banned In The Movie Industry Too…

Leila Djansi

The last time I heard Leila Djansi and Socrate Sarfo on saturday’s Peacefm Entertainment Review, the two were slightly on each others neck as to the content and Ghana Movie Awards nomination of “Adult Only” as well as “Sinking Sands”.

According to Leila Djansi that day, she has been disappointed in the recent chain of work coming from the camp of  Socrate Sarfo of which “Hot Fork and Adult Only” are examples.  She calmly said, she used to respect and like the movies Socrate Sarfo was doing some years back. His sudden drift to Soft porn movies baffles her mind.

According to Leila, she sees Socrate Sarfo as a “father” and therefore as a daughter, she approached him some time back to express her disappointment in his current chain of movies.

As you may know by now, Socrate Sarfo is not a walk over man. He came back to Leila on the show and stated among other things that, if  Leila does not think “Adult Only” is good enough to be nominated for the Ghana Movie Awards, she should notify the stakeholders.

He also said, he does not even understand why  Leila Djansi’s  current movie “Sinking Sands”  has been nominated since it is not yet RELEASED to the public. This jump started a whole lengthy debate on what “RELEASE” means in Film Production. (I do not want to go into their RELEASE debate on here)

The two producers are at it again to the extent that Leila has threatened to withdraw “Sinking Sands” which has secured 13 nominations from the upcoming Ghanaian Movie Awards.

………………………………………………………………………………………

With just a week to the much-talked about Ghana Movie Awards (GMAs), News-One has gathered that all is not well with the event as tempers are flaring and abusive words flying all over.

Several of the nominated movie makers are grumbling and threatening to boycott the ceremony while two of the nominated producers, Socrates Sarfo of ‘Hot Fork’ fame and Leila Djansi, producer of ‘Sinking Sands’ are at each other’s throat.

While Leila is threatening to withdraw her ‘Sinking Sands’ movie from the nomination list because of Socrates Sarfo’s ‘Adult Only’, Socrates Has called her bluff, saying she did not qualify to be in the competition in the first place and showed clearly that he wanted her movie axed.

Socrates threatened to walk out of a seminar of actors and movie producers held last Wednesday if Leila was allowed to sit in the meeting. ‘Sinking Sands’ had twelve nominations, while

‘Adults Only’ had two but producers of the two movies are yet to reconcile their differences. “Yes I am pulling out of the awards and I have not hidden that. If the concept is to grow our industry and reward hard work, then ‘Adults Only’ is not a movie that should get nominated for the category of Best Director. It makes the whole thing look like a big joke or something being done to please someone. Let’s get serious for once just as Shirley Frimpong-Manso got serious in directing ‘A Sting In A Tale’, Leila told News-One.

She continued: “The fact that ‘Sinking Sands’ and a movie like ‘A Sting In A Tale are nominated besides his little ‘Adults Only’ is insulting. All these things that he is doing; organizing people to gang up and ban someone, I am sure I am going to be the next to be banned whatever. I don’t care about Sarfo and his plots and schemes.”
Socrates Sarfo has however maintained his stance that Leila did not qualify because though her movie was premiered in Ghana, it had not been released onto the Ghanaian market.

The ‘Hot Fork’ man said he shared this position with the Film Producers of Ghana (FIPAG), though he was the only person articulating it publicly. “Premiering a movie does not necessarily mean releasing of a film. We all know what releasing a film is about and not somebody coming to twist the meaning to suit his or her agenda,” Socrates told News-One.

When asked if he was not feeling intimidated because ‘Sinking Sands’ was a high budget movie, as compared to his ‘Adults Only’, Socrates flared up: “Whoever will say that me Socrates Sarfo ever said that Leila’s movie is a high budget movie and is better than the films that we have; whoever is saying that, I will say is sick in the head and must check him or herself well.

“Maybe he or she goes to bed and hears voices and wakes up and says things because I, Socrates Sarfo have not said that anywhere. So if the person is saying that, maybe the person is sick and must check his or her head because I have not said that anywhere,” Socrates charged.

Executive Producer of the GMAs, Fred Nuamah, has however cleared the air that Leila’s ‘Sinking Sands’ qualified to be in the nomination list and that he had already explained that position to FIPAG. “I myself called Leila and Shirley Frimpong-Manso to present her ‘Sinking Sands’ and ‘6 Hours To Christmas’.

But Shirley could not meet the time. I don’t want to comment about this issue any longer because I have already done that with the producers and they are aware. I had a meeting with them and the Actors Guild and I don’t want to put in the media what we discussed at that meeting,” Fred Nuamah noted.

  3. As for this Socrates he will surely break the front of the movie industry with his stinking attitude. How he could gather a nomination for his stinking movies beats my imagination and shows how unserious we are! There is simply no acting in his movies so he tries to spice them up with unnecessary and unrefined sex scenes. shame, shame and shame!

I applaud you for standing up to this man and expressing your thoughts. It’s extremly insulting for Sacrote Sarfo’s movies to be nominated.

  5. Hello Ghana, lets get real and move with the Century. Sarfo or what ever he calls him self. In the developing countries a movie can be nominated even if is not release to the public, due to its, Budget, Profile, and Standard of the movie it can be nominated, they project to see if the movie will really be a big hit, like Avatar. it is done in America and every where. Every thing in Ghana is done with arm twisting and manipulation. When are we going to change. Sarfo ” Hort Fork” is not a movie to be nominated, Talking about Class, the characters, are terrible, very low class. This is nothing good to write home about. His new trend of movie now is very bad, with serious “Grenada” actress. He should shut up and stop the manipulation and this Banning Nonsense. Banning Yvonne makes sense, but the rest is looking like the real Ghanaian style of doing things. Fred Nuamah if u want your awards programme to last, let it be fair and transparent. For once Ghana let do it right. Peace!

  6. Eeii Leila again…hmmm…anyway i agree with her on dis one…socrate needs to understand that if a movie is premiered to the public, it equally qualifies for nominations…since they like to copy copy everything da western do, in america, movies get nominated (if premiered) before being released to the public at walmart, target, etc….so socrate go find out abt how organizing awards works…but i just dnt think both those movies qualify to be in the nominations because there should be a time frame…i think the whole thing is rushed…aren’t they suppose to nominate movies that came out last year 2009 (i stand to be corrected)?I mean since the award is in 2010………………oh well

        • Today, I heard Fred Amugi and another planning committee member indicating on GTV that the time frame was from October 2009 to October 2010. I was shocked because I watched a nominated  movie like Shakira in August 2009!

  12. I wonder if God is ever gonna forgive us of the sins we’ve done to each other. This seems like a real story now! This seems like a real trend of BULLSHIT with Socrate foolish Sarfo. How can you impart the younger generation with SOFT PORNS? So can’t there be a well written and directed movies with good cast like what Leila and Shirley are doing? Socrate Foolish Safo only wants to retards the development of the Movie Industries with his STUPID banning of actress/actors that have come a long way in bring the industry to a limelight. Well Leila, don’t worry, you have a whole lot of FUNS out there who appreciates your good work. Why don’t you just drop out from the MOVIE AWARDS cause it is a YAWA awards. Socrate Sarfo needs to learn and be humble and it’s about high time someone tell him SENSE in that BIG FUCKING heard of his. Gyeme fo>.

  15. speak on it Leila! We’re right behind you. We need movies that portray the Ghanaian condition and not these bullshit that I can make all by myself in my living room (no disrespect intended. I can do it!).

Do you mean to tell me the movie that has a bear forking some woman that they show plain plain has been nominated? For what?  I bet they dey create this movie awards by themselves to give to themselves to hype up their product. I fail to see why the general public will nominate such movie. I saw Hot Fork and I was disappointed at best. I didn’t find anything in it or about it sexy at all. It was busted and boring. We need good movies! period.

Leila keep fighting. some info will come your way shortly to assist you in your fight. Respect my sister.
