Charter House, the organisers of the annual Ghana Music Awards  said goodbye and farewell to MTN, their long standing headline sponsor for the Ghana Music Awards at Citizen Kofi in Accra yesterday.

MTN has been replaced with Vodafone as the new sponsor of the awards. According to the organisers, Vodafone has showed its readiness and loyalty to the growth of the Ghana Music Industry, hence the reason why, they will be headlining the awards, commencing 2012.

Mrs. Theresah Ayaode, the Executive Director of the awards, thanked MTN, who has sponsored the awards for close to a decade. She conceded that, indeed, the interest and investment made by MTN to the brand over the years added value to the franchise and acknowledged that, that has brought the awards this far.

With the sponsorship baton handed over to Vodafone; the awards will be now known as ‘Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Festival’. The network known for its great and catchy commercials comes in at a time when the whole entire awards process and content is being looked at critically.

To start the overhauling, all Ghana Music Awards Committees; Categorization, Nomination, Selection and Planning Committees will be dissolved pending review.

Also, a technical committee comprising of objective and knowledgeable practitioners in the industry will be constituted to undertake certain jobs such as (1) Review the Ghana Music Awards Categories. (2) Review the entire process of nominations and voting and (3) Review and revamp the whole festival content.

The outcome of the reviews will be published for the general public.

Vodafone coming in as the official title sponsors of the much celebrated awards appears to be a step in the right direction. Chief Marketing Officer of Vodafone Ghana, Uche Udofile told the gathering why her company had come on board.

“As one of the most powerful means of communication, we believe we have a lot to contribute to the music and entertainment industry in Ghana. We are excited by the new ideas and concepts Charterhouse have in mind for the Ghana Music Awards – it’s a massive event in the calendar of the music industry and we are pleased to be able to support it. The changes you will see in the GMA next year will create a more vibrant festival with a transparent and fair judging process”.

She later announced the plans of Vodafone setting a foundation dubbed the ‘Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Foundation’.

The foundation will cater for the needs of upcoming musicians and also train and help the pioneers in the industry. She reiterated the fact that, the foundation is just one of the numerous projects, the Ghana Music Awards brand will enjoy from Vodafone.

At Citizen Kofi were some executives of the MUSIGA Union, in the person of out-going president Diana HOpeson, out-going vice Amandzeba Nat Brew, newly president elect Bice Osei Kuffour [Obour], Mark Okraku Mantey, Sammy Forson and a cross section of the media.

Vodafone now appears to be a friendly telecom network to the entertainment industry in Ghana as they recently signed a lucrative three year contract with 4Stye TV to take over the rights of the popular 4STYE TV show on TV3 and eTV Ghana.

They have also bought the rights of the 4Stye Music Video Awards and events associated with the event.

They started the Vodafone Icons: Divas Edition last year which saw trio RNM emerging winners. The second edition of their ‘020 Live’ musical concert also comes in with American R&B crooner Trey Songz headlining the event.
