Can’t Believe This: Forbes Names 40 Most Powerful Celebrities In Africa & There Is No Ghanaian In There…

Jackie Appiah, Ama K Abebrese And Menaye Donkor
Jackie Appiah, Ama K Abebrese And Menaye Donkor

Forbes has named what they call ‘40 Most Powerful Celebrities‘ in Africa and I am extremely shocked with the list. Out of their 40 Most Powerful Celebrities in Africa, no Ghanaian appeared in there….

Did they forget about Ghana? Names like Genevieve Nnanji, Didier Drogba , Don Jazzy, 2face, P-square and others made the list and yet Reggie Rockstone, Jackie Appiah, Michael Essien, Abedi Pele and others from Ghana could not be counted in…

The list was compiled by Forbes contributor- Mfonobong Nsehe. According to Mfonobong, he based the list on this…

“Determining the celebrities who exert the highest degree of influence in contemporary African pop culture involved sifting through the nominations for the individuals with the highest numbers of votes, and then measuring their media visibility (exposure in print, television, radio and online), number of web references on Google, TV/radio mentions and their general clout across the continent. Ideally, a robust social media presence would have been an invaluable yardstick in determining the intensity of influence these individuals exert over their enthusiasts.”

Anyway, what do you think about the list? Do you agree with it and what do you think of the no mention of any Ghanaian celebrity?

Based on the fact that Abedi Pele, Michael Essien and other names did not pop up, I can boldly say…The list is somehow groundless, biased and probably full of CRAP!

I am not hating but based on the criteria outlined above, how can Nneka, 2face, Don Jazzy, Samuel Eto’o, Genevieve Nnaji,  D’Banj, Asa and  K’Naan make the list without any Ghanaian?  I can point out several Ghanaian celebrities who can displace some of these people based on the criteria above….

  2. I have some critical questions. 1. Where does the writer or the person who compiled the list come from? Where does he live? It seems he just listed the people he knows or sees on his tv in relation to where he is based. What happened to the great Ghanaian authors? What happened to Komi antwi, samini , kwaw ansah and others. If wole sonyinka make it why couldn’t kofi annan also make it as a scholar ?

  3. No ghanaian actor or actress is worthy of being on the list…how dare u compare jackie appiah with genevieve. Genevieve of course has more international recognition than any ghanaian movie star (she was on oprah show- oprah named her the most popular african actress in the world, interviewed by cnn, she parties with naomi campbell, was considered for a movie role by julia robert, featured in about 3 international movies, she’s the highest paid actress in africa, featured on international magazines

ALTHOUGH I FEEL LIKE INTERNATIONALY KNOWN GHANAIANS LIKE
ESSIEN AND AMA ATA AIDOO SHOULD HAVE MADE THE LIST
THIS LIST IS PRETTY SOLID. THE PEOPLE HERE EXCEPT DON JAZZY AND A FEW
ARE GLOBALLY KNOWN NAMES, SOMETIMES US GHANAIANS THINK OUR STARS AND ICONS ARE SO WELL KNOWN BUT THEY REALLY ARENT

Yes no Ghanaian made it on the list. Na BY FORCE? Jackie Appiah is no where near Genevieve. She cannot even touch Ini Edo’s toe. Accept it. Ghanaians are trying but you have to learn to walk before you run.. The Nigerians have been running for a long time. When Ghanaians were sitting down saying memp3 mihu as3m…..as usual. You have now seen that nobody regards your Jackie Appiah. Cry me a river Sarah. Up Naija. Y’all rock!

  7. I don’t know all the people from the list, but I can see many names who’ve made it internationally. If any Ghanaian celeb should’ve been on the list it should be Asamoah Gyan and maybe Essian. But then what has Essian done the last years that he should be included on the list?
Ghanaian movie stars, are only known in Ghana and Naija, so why should they be on there? Genevieve is there maybe as she was on CNN and Oprah and if she doing other work that is recon, on the continent… who knows. Good for dose who made it.

  8. If Genevieve is on this list, then that’s all that matters to me..Jackie is only known on this website n her hometown..but Asamoah Gyan n Essien shd be on this list if Drogba n eto’o r on there..bcos they’re all gud players..I’m even thinking Forbes doesn’t know a country call ghana mpo..

  9. What do you guys expect? A list compiled by a Nigerian will definitely be a 419 list. Full of Nigerians than anything. What even happened to those South African celebrities? Celebrities from Egypt , Morocco and others?

As Chris said, this list is groundless. Stupid list compiled in someone’s bedroom. Who cares about Forbes anyway?

  14. Tell me one track released by reggie rockstone, samini or any ghanaian artists that is well receieved all over africa. 2face has got african queen that paved way for many african artists, he became the first mtv ema award winner. U guys and other countries play more nigerian music than ur local artists music. Dbanj is the hottest in africa. Asa is the best soul artist in africa, she’s been featured on david letterman show, broke into the us billboard chart and iTunes chart, performed at the french music award. Nneka is more international than any Ghanaian artist; she was on tour with damien marley and nas, featured top international acts. Psquare is the biggest in africa with a sould out tour.

You guys shouldn’t judge from how good ur artists are in ur country. Ask other african countries how nigerian artists are famous compared to ghanaian.

You guys should just blame it on the small population

  19. We have to start by appreciating our own so others can other learn to appreciate us….The musicians also have to keep the international people in mind when making their songs. .. The movie producers and writers also have to look for good actors and actress to work with.. It’s time for us to get over this ‘beautiful’ & ‘handsome’  gets you more movie roles thing…… And as for those saying no Ghanaian is worthy to be on the list, that is soo not fair. Considering how much we appreciate Nigeria’s art just like they do… I’m surprise Omotola and Ramsey are not on the list.. However, I love Genevieve… So, congratulations to all that made the list… Better Luck next time to *US…..lol.

  21. OH MY GOD. ARE GHANAIANS THIS STUPID. I DONT EVEN KNOW WHY THIS IS NEWS HERE ON THIS WEBSITE. WHY SHLD WE ALLOW OURSELVES TO BE INTIMIDATED BY A FREAKING NIGERIAN BLOGGER ON FORBES. HE IS A FREAKING NIGERIAN AND AS USUAL HE WILL NEVER SEE ANY GOOD IN ANY GHANIAN EVEN IF WE WALK TO THE MOON.THE NATIONALITY OF THE COMPILER OF THIS LIST ALONE SHLD HVE TOLD YOU GUYS THIS IS FAKE. FYI THIS COMPILER NEVER INCLUDED ANY GHANAIAN FOR ANYBODY TO VOTE FOR. OUR STARS ARE ALSO INFLUENTIAL IN AFRICA. WE DONT NEED A FREAKING NIGERIAN TO TELL US WHAT WE ARE WORTH. THAT COUNTRY WILL NEVER SEE ANYTHING GOOD IN GHANA. FOR EXAMPLE ONE TIME THERE WAS THIS STORY ON NIGERIAFILMS.COM ABT NOLLYWOOD ACTORS WHO SELL MOVIES AND GUESS WHAT, VAN VICKERS NAME WAS NOT EVEN MENTIONED EVEN THOUGH THIS DUDE’S FACE SELLS MOVIES IN BOTH AFRICA AND BEYOND. THE CARRIBEANS LOVE THIS DUDE LIKE CRAZY AND YES MOST PEOPLE BUY NIGERIAN MOVIES BECAUSE OF HIM. EVEN HERE IN THE US, DUDE GOT A LOTTA FANS EVEN THOUGH I THINK HE IS NOT A GOOD ACTOR. HIS FACE SELLS NOLLYWOOD MOVIES. WHETHER NIGERIA NS LIKE IT OR NOT, IT IS A SIMPLE FACT THATS WHY HE IS ALMOST IN EVERY NIGERIA MOVIE BECAUSE THEY ARE MAKING MONEY OUT OF HIM. YET HIS CONTRIBUTIONS WAS NOT RECOGNIZED BY NIGERIAN WHY BECAUSE HE IS A FREAKING GHANAIAN. A GHANAIAN DID NOT MAKE IT ON THIS LIST SO FREAKING WHAT. THIS WAS NOT A LIST COMPILED BY A FREAKING GENUINE FORBES WORKER BUT BY SOME FREAKING NIGERIAN BLOGGER. WHY SHLD GHANAIANS KILL THEMSELVES OVER THIS.

    • @NANAAMA, Well surely you know that just make Van Vicker A BIT OF A SELL OUT. If he is only being used for his looks why not at least do that in your own country not where you will be used and then not appreciated. So really that’s on him.

      • @GoldenGrul, i know. i never liked him because of that. i guess he never thought the ghanaian movie industry could grow to this point. like i always nigerians are very smart people. they moved in fast and bought his soul. he coulda done it the way Majid and john do it, act in both countries. instead he decided to be a sell out. i guess Venus production company, the production company that made him, was hurt by this but that God they hve moved on. majid is doing great with them and i guess they appreciate him more because he seems like a very genuine guy. what i was trying say in my previous post is that they coulda atleast recognize his significance in their movie undustry because believe it or not that dude’s face sells movie even more than those they mentioned. you shld see how my carribean friends here in the US blush anytime Van Vickers name is mentioned. they dont even realized that he is not such a good a actor.

excatly my sentiments! other things in the know. What is even J.J doing for Ghana since he left office?. With Yvonne’s project I can say none of them has taken any project up for us that can attract the world’s attention! That Ivorian Drogba, is doing a lot for his country, lobbing UN and i read that he did a free ad for Pepsi if they can build a hopitel for his nation!
even Essien pledge and paid a hoping sum at one of his fund raising gala! what are u guys seeing? Come to think of it, they can lobby for us on thier trips and it must begin with internation big brands in Ghana first! Then their international expossure will be noticed, It’s the influnce and the awareness you bring not only to your country but the world at large people!

  24. This list  was very solid. Ghanaians Love complaining much. I’m very sure even if it was a white who compiled the list they would still be whining. Mfonobong the forbes contributor had already outlined the criterion above they used in picking the celebrities. I’ve cross checked the list and when i applied the standard he used, i discovered all the celebrities he mentioned really deserved and earned their spot in the list. Sorry… but i don’t agree the list is anyway biased. The truth is sometimes our celebrities aren’t really famous the way we think they are. Is surprising how you Ghanaian folks keep making mention of Kofi Anan like he actually deserved a spot in the list while you keep forgetting that Sierra Leonians could also Complain about Aisha Sesay (CNN international correspondent) who didn’t make the cut.
For every one Ghanaian celebrity you can mention that deserved to be in the list, i could mention five Nigerian celebrity that are better and had also achieved more but still didn’t make it into the Forbes list.

    • @Saint Stephen,
My problem with u nigerians is that, u guys are always try to bring ghana down or overlook ghana achievements. there are ghanaians who are also making an impact in Africa.how dare u compare Kofi Annan(the former UN secretary General) to Aisha Sessay (a mere Cnn Contributer). Do u even know the significance of that position at all. i bet u if this was alist compiled by a white genuine Forbes worker, this list wouldnt have been baised. because u know what, they got database of most prominent people in Africa, and ghanaians are some of them. is not always abt u nigerians ok, even though thats what u guys want. it should be abt nigerians or nobody else. that selfish and greedy demeanor of most nigerians. thats one reason why u guys dont like ghanians because ghanaian are the only west african country that is not quite like the rest are. every little thing abt ghanains is like a competition to nigerians. i dont get u guys sometimes. even when ghana discovered oil, most nigerians were not happy because they think they now hve a competitor. i just laughed at some of the comment i read from these nigerian blog sites. i even think the word celebrity was not the right word to use to here. because believe it or not, if u should put van vicker and Chinua Achebe on the same stage, i bet people will go bananas over van than chinua achebe. its sad but its the simple truth. like over here in the United States, who give a damn abt some freaking Author when the likes of George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, Denzel washington, etc exists. people die for these celebrities ok. do u know how many authors America got yet we dont see them on Tv because nobody gives a damn about them. Being a celebrities is not necessarily what u hve done but rather how much fan base u got. a typical example is Paris Hilton. this lady has never done anything substantial rather than inherent a huge sum of money from her grandfather, the owner of the infamous Hilton Hotel. She is a huge celebritiy here in the US because she is likeable. its the fans that creates a celebritiy. the more fans shows interest in liking them, the more they are put on forefront for everybody to see and appreciate. put majid and chinua achebe on the same stand and ask people to vote on who is most likeable and i bet u majid will win big time against chinua achebe even though chinua is a great icon to Mama Africa just like Kofi Annan is. some my brother do not undermine the acheivements of Kofi Annan, the first black african to be UN secretary General, by comparing him with a common Cnn contributor like Aisha Sasay. Pls because he is ghanaian, you want to undermine his achievements and contribution he has made to Mama Africa. i bet if he was nigerian, you would be singing a different tune right? Kofi Annan is also an African icon, but even that If u put Kofi Annan and Majid on the same pedastal and ask people to vote for their favorite, majid will win big time. its not always about what u hve done but rather how likeable you are. how many times do u see chinua achebe or kofi annan in the public eye. majid is always seen in movies and to a lotta people, he is more current. even some of my african american female friends here watch african movies because of him.

      • @NANAAMA,

We have heard you. It is long paragraphs like this that make ppl think the jealousy is on the side of Ghanaians. There are bloggers in Ghana too. Ghanaians could have collaborated with Forbes to put the list together first. But we didn’t. Somebody else who was Nigerian did and now Ghanaians are up in arms. Next time lets put together our own list FIRST. If you sit on the sidelines and a Nigerian does it first, dont expect to have your people on it. Only Ghanaians can promote Ghana. Not Nigerians.

        Reply
      • @NANAAMA,
Firstly, i don’t know how you came about the assumptions that Nigerians hate Ghanaians, I Love Ghana and i do watch Ghana movies a lot. I’m sure i could also say the same about  my naija brothers. Your schools are mostly populated by Nigerians. So i don’t know how you came to the conclusion that we hate Ghana. You ghanaians are the ones always trying to shove your accomplishments down our throats and when we refuse to swallow the pill you term it hatred.

I’m surprised how you called Sesay a mere CNN contributor. Aisha is an international correspondent who had virtually interviewed all the presidents around the world- including Barrack Obama. She is the Anchor of Inside Africa and anyone who wants to see Africa, gets to see her first. If you call that ordinary then i’m sure a lot of people would also the same about Kofi Anan’s Achievements.

And how dare you even compare Van or Majid to Chinua Achebe? I refuse to accept that they could be both placed on the same pedestal. For crying out loud! Chinua is a renowned Author who wrote a book that broke into the US market and got translated into more than 16 international languages. He won several world international prices
including United Nations ambassadorial appointments. So besides Ghana and Nigeria were else can you get folks who would vote for Majid? No Ghanaian movie will ever break into US market. Chinua Achebe is not only known in Africa but globally. He attends World forums and summits and dines with the high and mighty of the world.

Lastly, i’ll remind you that politicians have no fans and on that grounds the likes of Kofi Anan have no place on that list. but if you want to go by achievements then i’ll invoke the likes of Philip Emeagwali, the Nigerian who invented the fastest computer or Ngozi okonjo iweala, the former world bank vice president or even Agbani Darego, the first African to win miss world. I could go on and on, but i’ll stop here for now.

Next time you want to compare Majid, compare him with the likes of Ramsey Noah- not Chinua Achebe.

And just a word of Advice- please learn how to paragraph. Reading long notes without paragraph makes reading strenuous, and people tend to lose track of lines. Any time you are about to start a new line of thought- start it with a paragraph.

  25. u guys are really funny. Aisha sesay would even laugh at u guys if she realized u guys compare her to Kofi Annan. more like comparing Anderson cooper to Barrack Obama where one is a cnn contributer and the other is the president of the free world. u r u guys kidding me. Kofi Annan was like the leader of the United Nations. Do you guys even recognized the significance of his post at all. here in America, he is highly respected than ur so called Chinua Achebe. Now tell me apart from Chinua Achebe’s personal achievements, i mean achivements pertaining to his own personal interest, what has he actually done for Africa, or even for ur country? Give me a break. Look i am not trying to undermine the achievement of chinua achebe,he has done good for himself which i admire, but u cant even compare him to Kofi Annan. Being a Secretary General, is more like being the leader of the world. You have a major say in what goes on in this world. i cant say that about chinua achebe. his achievement is very limited. i am sorry but thats the truth. he has no say in the affairs of the world unlike Kofi Annan. i say Aisha sassay is a common contributor because she does what contributors normally do. she is not the only person prominent people. come to think of it, i think she even deserves a spot than that ur crack head looking singer nneka. this list is bogus and u guys know that even though i know u are trying hard to defend this guy cause he is from ur country. even some yurobas at this nigerian blogsite i visited were also angry about how this list is full of Igbos. this is a list based on the opinion of one person. who cares? He is not a genuine Forbes employee.

You are the quintessential jealous Ghanaian!!! If Isha Sesay’s first name had been Nana Ama or his last name was Agyemang, you would have been singing a different song. How dare you rubbish Chinua Achebe? Which ghanaian author is as well known as he is? You want others to hail your meager achievements but you don’t not want to give others credit? Typical. While you are holding your brothers hand to the cross, remember you are on the ground with him.
