Yvonne Okoro’s ‘The Contract’ movie which was directed by ace-director-Shirley Frimpong Manson saved Ghana yesterday in Malawi from an unexpected humiliation as it was the only movie from Ghana that obtained many nominations.
This year, AMAA received a total of 671 films for consideration, including 184 short films, 108 Diaspora features – documentaries and shorts films, 60 documentaries from Africa and 319 feature films from within and outside Africa, including films made by Africans living abroad.

Award winning director Shirley Frimpong Manso leads the nominations in the ‘AMAA 2013 Prize For Best Director’ category alongside Niji Akanni (Hereos And Zeroes), David Kitounga (Nairobi Half Life), and Ntshavheni Wa Luruli (Elelwani).
The two main characters in the movie, Yvonne Okoro and South African actor Hlomla Dandala both were nominated in the ‘AMAA 2013 Prize For Best Actress In A Leading Role’ and ‘AMAA 2013 Prize For Best Actor In A Leading Role’ respectively.
Yvonne Okoro will be facing challenges from Florence Masebe (Elelwani), Mariam Ouedraogo (Moi Zaphira), Rita Dominic (The Meeting), Mbutung Seikeh (Ninah’s Diary) and Flora Suya (Last Fishing Boat).
Hlomla Dandala also faces challenges from the newly crowned Best Actor at the just ended AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards OC Ukeje (Alan Poza), Bimbo Manuel (Hereos And Zereos), Lindani Nkosi (Zama Zama), Justus Esiri (Assasins Practice), Femi Jacobs (The Meeting) and Amurin Wumnembom (Ninah’s Dowry).
Kwaku Ananse, a short film from Ghana got one nominations in the ‘AMAA 2013 Prize For Best Short Film’ category.
‘Contract’ tells a story of a “successful Businessman Peter Poplampo, the ultimate alpha male. He is 40 years old, rich, and a staunch bachelor. Despite his mother’s persistent attempt to find him a woman, Peter sticks to his rule of non-committal casual dates, freedom and being in control of his life until a yearning to have a child arises.
In his quest to find the woman who will take his money, have his child and disappear, Peter begins a roller coaster, contracted relationship with Abena Boateng, a crude but clever local girl who is anything but impressed with Peter’s affluence.
With a clear definitive contract from his lawyer outlining the dos and don’ts of bearing Peter Poplampo’s child, these two opposites must exercise every ounce of will power not to kill each other until the child is born.
An unsuspecting Romantic Comedy with unusual twists that exposes the flaws in being in control of your life”.
The movie is funny; it’s sexy with bizarre twists that will keep you guessing till the very end.

Not a lot of Ghana nominations.. But congrats to Y.O.. hope she wins
The contract got all those nominations? Dat means d movie will be cool. Yvonne Okoro will win d best actress. I would have loved Rita to win but she won last year so Yvonne take it. Am suprised Last flight to Abuja got many nods. Oc Ukeje should win d best actor.
I really hope Shirley wins………she’s a phenomenom director, one of a kind. hlomla and Yvonne, congrats bring home the award Yvonne. and last but not least………what is this whole crap with the ‘best Nigerian movie’ category??? I don’t think that’s fair and right at all………this whole award is about Africa but clearly, every year, its being made about Nigeria…….ive never heard of a ‘best LA film’ or ‘best NY film’ or ‘best Hollywood film’ category/nomination at the Oscars before…NEVER EVER!!!
Yvonne okoro is a Nigerian…….and her movie is registered as a Nollywood movie……the only nominee for Ghana from the list i saw there is Shirly Frimpong-Manso(proud of her by the way)…………..Yvonne okoro is Nigerian i repeat nobody from my dear country bears a name like chinyererere okerekekere okoro no one thank you very much…………her ppl can have her hence why they nominated her movie for their stupid awards when we have better movies from Ghana
So GC, she’s Ghanaian now? Make up your mind.
That is exactly what I was thinking! So chris she’s ghanaian now???!!
Now yvonne okoro is now a ghanian lol
