POLITRICKS OF THE DAY: Here We Go Running To The White Man For Help…Energy Minister Requests US Support

Kwame Nkrumah

So you see, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was totally wrong about the new Africa being ‘ready to fight her own battles and show that after all the black man is capable of managing his own affairs’-at least when it comes to Ghana.

It seems still the new Africa (Ghana) is not ready to run its own affairs as we cannot solve any of our own self created problems. In whatever little or big problem we find ourselves, we have to go running to the white man begging them to come and help us…

This makes some of us wonder; why did we fight them for independence then?

Daily Guide Reports;

Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister of Energy and Petroleum, has called for support from the U.S Government to help solve the energy problems in the country.

The minister, who made the call when the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Gene A. Cretz, called on him at his office in Accra, said the country was ready for increased collaboration with the US in the area of energy.

To be able to satisfy the increasing demand for energy in the country, Mr Armah-Buah said government needs to generate an additional 200 megawatts every year for the next 20 years.

He stated that Government was putting measures in place in preparation for the second compact of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, which mainly targets Ghana’s energy sector.

Mr. Armah-Buah therefore stressed the need for full co-operation among all stakeholders to ensure that the compact agreement was effectively developed and executed.

He said that there were plans in the short-term to restore normal supply of electricity within the next few weeks. Also, he said the restoration of the West African gas pipeline, the Takoradi 3 (T3) Thermal Plant, one unit of Bui Hydro Dam and Sunon-Asogli Power Plant will ensure continuous flow of electricity in Ghana and to her West African neighbours.

“The country is also looking at alternative sources of energy. For instance, renewable energy, for which a bill has been passed, as well as producing energy from waste will be seriously considered.

Mr. Buah expressed government’s appreciation to the US Government for the support to Ghana over the years.

Ambassador Cretz said because of the democratic credentials of Ghana, many US companies want to invest in the country.

He said the second compact of the MCC would strengthen the energy sector in order to make Ghana self-sufficient in energy generation and a net exporter of the commodity to her neighbours in the West African sub-region and beyond.

Ambassador Cretz also noted that the relationship between the two countries was excellent and expressed the hope that it would be strengthened in future.

…And some of you sit down and throw stones at white men, insisting them are the cause of Africa’s problems and have nothing good for us. When it looks like without them, we will even die of hunger. I am not sure we can be able to adequately farm and feed ourselves should we be left alone…WTH!

If we are not asking them to help with us with agricultural, we will be begging them to help us fight malaria or cholera , or will be asking them to help us fight famine. In some cases, we even ask them to help us build gutters and places where we will make ourselves neat  (toilets).

  1. There are several Ghanaian experts in energy (eg. engineers & physicists) that the government could approach to help but to date, Government has refused to hold meetings to consult with these people. If we even want help from another country, another African country like South Africa has sorted out its energy issues, why can’t we approach them than to run to these white people begging? It is laziness that has led people like this minister to beg rather than for us to sit down & find solutions to our own problems. If we put our heads down, we can solve our own problems- we’ve relied on others for years & where has it taken us?

  2. There is nothing wrong in looking for investments from foreign partners. Even US has foreign  investments on its soil.

  3. I am actually surprised that people haven’t commented much on this article especially for a good thing being done here. We actually need this. We need the funding not just expertise. Afia mentionned our engineers and things but we need to funding to do what needs to be done so KUDOS TO THE MINISTER.. AT LEAST HE IS LOOKING SOMEWHERE ELSE FOR MORE FUNDING. WHETHER IT WILL BE USED THE RIGHT WAY IS ANOTHER TOPIC.
