‘Ghollywood’ Finally Accepted As The Official Name Of Ghana’s Movie Industry

Jackie Appiah And Shirley Frimpong Manso

Ghallywood has for some years now been known (unofficial though) as the name of the Ghanaian movie industry, but, during the launching of Ghana Movie Awards for 2013 on Tuesday 3rd Dec, 2013 at the Golden Tulip hotel in Accra, the President of the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG), Mr. Stephen Hackman, annulled it.

In his own words he said “Ladies and Gentlemen, one thing which has been on my heart personally for some time now and I believe most of my colleagues is a name for Ghana’s film industry. May I therefore suggest, as many seem to think along with me, the name Ghollywood for our movie industry.

Please note the spelling – GHOLLYWOOD, Mr. Hackman spelt the name out well for journalists around to take note.

In an exclusive duologue with Mr. Hackman recently, he told GhanaCelebrities.Com that they (FIPAG) shall launch Ghollywood in a grand style for all and sundry to know.

Nollywood is 20 years now – since the name Nollywood was suggested by a Nigerian journalist and ever since, became the official name of Nigeria’s movie industry. On Saturday, 2nd December, 2012, was the historic celebration of Nollywood at 20 with a grand opening event themed “Nollywood Celebrity Glam Night,” at the magnificent Intercontinental Hotel, Lagos.

FOR THE LADIES: Would You Rather Be With A Man With Money or Time?

A young black woman

It was Christmas morning and I was desperate to find an excuse to leave work.

Usually my boss lets the marketing department go by the evening of 24th after the books have been balanced.  But this year, something about a good account to be pulled in meant that we had to work on Christmas day—-and who were we to complain?

Somebody must have grumbled too loud, because he called us right away into a Cabal (Current account balance) meeting—-and stood in front of us with his middle age, dignified, corporate scowl.

He said “some of you think I am turning you into robots. But note that I am setting you up to be principled and stick with the most important things in life. What matters, what will pay the bills.

And I am here myself working with you because this is important! There was once a time I had to be in an important meeting while my wife was in labour giving birth to our first child. I made the right decision because that meeting was a life-changing one.

When I got to the hospital after the meeting, my wife had already had our baby alone. The doctor called me into his consulting room gave me a huge bill and a long lecture about how I should have stayed by my wife’s side instead.

So I looked at him long and hard and said, -Doctor, what if I had stayed by my wife and ended up unable to pay this huge bill before me, would that make you happier? Would that have made her labour easy? Or would it just have seemed proper? “

The room was quiet.

So he continued…”I would rather give you less time and more money to spend than too much time and no money. And if anyone dislikes that, you can find your way to another job. Are we clear?”

“In the spirit of giving this season, I and my family decided to come here and spend Christmas day with you, by donating these items.

“Small as they are, we hope they will be of good use to the children here.”
