My Church Is Better Than Yours –The ‘Born Again’ Movement

Jesus Christ

I believe a person going on ‘evangelism’ is to spread the gospel but not to go bashing people because of their denomination and where they worship. I don’t despise the intention of evangelism but I despise the fact that the ‘evangelist’ is on a prowl to condemn your denomination (especially if yours is an orthodox one). He/she will tell you in no uncertain terms that until one goes to a charismatic church; he/she is not ‘born-again’ and cannot inherit the kingdom of God.

I was brought up as a Presbyterian and now worship in a charismatic church (because I don’t have any Presbyterian church around) and being in a charismatic church does not make me any born-again than one who attends an orthodox church or any other denomination for that matter neither and do I believe I am any better than they are.

They (the people evangelising) will let you off a bit if you’re part of the ‘charismatic movement’ if not, condemnation flows. That means if you go to any other church apart from a charismatic one, forget heaven and they give Christianity a very bad rap and the main aim of evangelism is never achieved. Condemning people is not love. What they achieve, at least, with me is that they’re reinforcing the ‘born-agains are arrogant/it’s my way or no way/I’m better than you’ stereotype. If they’re evangelising to draw people to their respective churches, they’re not going to get any because their approach is poor. Evangelise but don’t condemn people’s faith, their person or their denominations – that is an individual choice for them to make. Anyone can say he/she is born again Christian (lip service) but does not even possess one fruit of the Holy Spirit i.e. love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control.

We live in a diverse society where some people even worship in the nude because according to them, Jesus Christ was crucified naked and that is their belief…maybe that will take them to heaven because they’re mimicking Christ. Others chant …etc. Whatever denomination/church we belong to, we should not condemn others and go telling them they need a biblical and praying church to be born again. We’ve attacked people’s way of life enough.

If one goes on evangelism to preach the good news, there is nothing wrong to invite the ‘hearer’ of the word to your church if not affiliated to any, but it’s outright wrong to tell someone who worships in an orthodox church that he/she is not born-again and must go to a praying and a bible believing church to receive the holy spirit. Every church uses the bible for its own doctrine and rituals. It is not everyone who likes to be in a church where unrighteous prayer, covetous prayers (pray for unbelievers wealth to be transferred to you), malicious prayers and vengeful prayers (let my enemies die in Jesus name) is the order of the day. It is not everyone who loves the ‘disco’ way of praising God and it is not everyone who wants to be slain in the spirit (hmm). It is not everyone who wants to belong to a church with a fancy name where you sow a seed to get anything your heart desire and pay for prayers and it is not everyone who wants to belong to a church where no less than three offerings are collected at every service; one for the Father, another for the Son and a third for the Holy Spirit – ALL the above is the characteristics of some of these so-called ‘Born Again’ charismatic churches.

Thus, I think its pure arrogance to say unquestioningly that an entire denomination (or separate religion, if you will) is ritualistic or not bible based. If I remember correctly, the bible says it’s the meek that will inherit the kingdom of Heaven, not the arrogant. Some churches are now giving incentives to new worshippers and personally I think it is better than drawing people away from God in the name of ‘evangelism’ crowned with a proud superior outlook to condemn people.

Oh heaven, we have a very long way to get there. Come to think of it, if Jesus Christ comes to land right now, where is he going worship? Probably, he will go straight to the pub!
