What Can Come Has Come | Bukom Banku Thrashes Out Ayittey Powers!

Ayitey Powers and Banku

The much anticipated bout between Braimah Kamoko (Bukom Banku) and Ayittey Powers has successfully come to an end. At the end of the bout, Bukom Banku was adjudged the winner by a unanimous decision by all three judges, making him the ‘Cruiserweight Non-Title’ champion.

This is how the game was scored

Judge 1: 117 – 109

Judge 2: 119 – 100

Judge 3: 120 – 108 (all in favour of Bukom Banku)

Bukom Baku’s Determination to Win

Several weeks before the bout, Banku had made it clear to the world that he would ‘kill’ Powers at the end of the game. Even on the judgment day, he was spotted ‘jumping’ from one FM and TV station to another, making claims of going all out to win the fight. In connection with these assertions, he chose to mount the ring with a coffin, signifying the fact that he was ready to burry Powers.

Throughout the commencement of the bout, Banku proved his determination to win the fight. Unlike Ayittey, Banku was quite aggressive, utilising every opportunity he got to attack Ayittey.

The comedic side of him wasn’t exhibited on the night. He really meant business. Full of energy and vim, he was able to dominate the fight all through the 12 rounds. His punches were on point as compared to his opponent. In effect, the decision by the judges to declare him winner was not doctored. Nonetheless, he couldn’t knock Ayittey down at round 7 as he always said.

Ayittey’s Hidden Agenda

As determined as Bukom was to win the fight, Ayittey on the other hand was so relaxed throughout the fight (except the last round where he became a bit conscious of himself).

For the first time, I thought it was an amateur boxer who was fighting Bukom. The international and professional side of him wasn’t exhibited on the night, leaving lots of his supporters worried.

As a professional boxer, I least expected him to joke with such a bout which many dignitaries left their homes to watch. Whilst Banku was seriously throwing punches at him, Powers was more concerned with rehearsing some ‘Night of 1000 laughs’ moves in the ring. His defences were so poor (not to even talk about his attacks), making him cling to his opponent most at times, as if they were rather contracted to hug each other.

As to what constituted his dullness that night, only God knows what his agenda was. It might probably be that he ate some of Joshua Clottey’s mysterious Banku and Okro stew before the fight or he was perhaps safeguarding his precious Brazillian hair.

When Two Good Friends Fight

This was in fact the most hyped bout in the history of Ghanaian boxing. To me, the fight didn’t live up to expectation. I expected more from the two boxers than what I saw. The vigour that the two of them put on showed that last night was nowhere near what they exhibited months and days before the bout. Was it just to gain worldwide publicity for the interest of some people involved?

For those who might not know, Bukom Banku and Ayittey Powers are very close friends. What do you expect to see when friends like this fight? The outcome is what we saw. In as much as Bukom Banku’s spirit overpowered Ayittey, the two didn’t fight to expectation as they made it seem like it was going to be.

One reason, according to Bukom Banku, why he wanted to fight Ayittey Powers was to elevate his career from a local champion to the international scene.

My question is; as good friends as they are, could it be the case that Ayittey was helping Bukom, by way of match-fixing, win the fight so that he (Bukom) can also be recognised internationally? This is because Ayittey Powers can fight way better than what we say last night.

Always remember, “Ability without mannerism is barbarism.”

For Your Information; Bukom Banku, yesterday afternoon pronounced that he had recorded a song with Samini. “It will be released after I beat Ayittey”, he recounted. Be ready for the song as well.
