NDC Approves 156 Million Dollar Loan to Buy Sanitary Pads…

Sanitary PadThis morning I was listening to president Mahama address the Nation. My brothers were insulting him and saying nothing will change and that he doesn’t mean all the assurances he was making on the radio. I was arguing on his behalf, telling them how he sounds remorseful this time around. And how I believe he has understood the message of #OccupyFlagStaffHouse and will get to work.

Well a few hours later, I feel stupid for supporting him. Truly the economy has reached a crisis point but our clueless leaders continue to make decisions that leave us believing they are viscous, wicked and vile and are only looking for quick excuses to line their own pockets.

I am still trying to recover from the shock of hearing and reading about the government approving a loan to buy pads! Such an insult to our frustrations as a nation…

In the middle of all these bad decisions, we have found nothing meaningful to spend money on but pads? NDC faithfuls were on Facebook defending it as a move to make sure students do not stay away from school because of bad sanitary and toilet facilities. Laughable!

Are we anywhere near economic recovery if we will make such juvenile economic decisions in the middle of several agitations from, different sectors of the economy? We have not recovered from a waste of resources in Brazil and here we are. Not even using our own money, we are borrowing 156 million dollars to buy sanitary pads! God in heaven!

And parliament approved this? How they managed to get the majority in parliament to agree to this still baffles me—a 156 million dollar World Bank facility. They said some of it will be used to improve schools and to grant scholarships but the bulk of it is primarily for pads.

Are we going to buy pads for students just this one time or will it be continued? Because once will not count. Girls do not have their period only for a short while.

The government of Ghana has truly procured a World Bank loan, part of which would be used to provide free sanitary pads for school girls! The pads will be distributed free of charge among the school girls.

The policy is in fulfillment of an NDC campaign promise, Minister of Education, Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang stated.

She said the issue must be treated with the urgency it deserved.

“The girls seem to be in school up to about class three and four and they begin to drop [out]. A lot of theories have been expounded as to why this is happening. So the issue of girl’s sanitation is not a laughing matter. It’s a very serious issue,” she explained.

She admonished all to support the policy and “handle it with the sensitivity that is required.”

But the Minority spokesperson on education, Professor Dominic Fobih and the MP for Weija Gbawe Rosemary Abrah Comfort are not buying this explanation.

They said, “I still feel strongly that taking loans to buy sanitary pads, rulers, pens and pencils is out of place.

“Why can’t we use our own budget to buy such a thing?” Fobih suggested.

“A lot of items in this that people will not take us serious. Going to borrow money and look at what we are going to use the money for. Sanitary pads? We must be serious” Rosemary Abrah Comfort said.

Clearly, we are not serious!
