BET Awards Organizers Have No Respect for African Acts…A Boycott Should Be the Way Forward

Dear Chris-Vincent,

African artist should boycott the BET Awards and just concentrate on developing their careers. It baffles me that people who are highly successful and famous in Ghana, Nigeria and other parts of Africa continue to make a fool out of themselves on TV all because the TV station is American.

Let’s not forget that BET gives the awards of African acts backstage—yet these artistes are made to set up and pose as if, it was part of their main show in front of empty chairs (pre recorded with some folks from God knows where brought in to shout). Just look at the photo above…

Last year, Ice Prince embarrassed the other acts and by extension the whole African music industry by asking the other nominated artistes to join him on stage to take a picture—-in an almost empty auditorium so that those back home in Africa will think they are ‘ballin’…

This same absurd act was repeated by Davido at this year’s awards, bringing to light the question; why are some African artists so desperate for recognition from the US? Now don’t get me wrong, it is good to be celebrated abroad but the BET awards is not the Grammys—and if they don’t respect you there, why bother?.

After hearing that this year’s African acts were made to perform in front of technicians, BET workers, cleaners and passerbyers, I just couldn’t hold it again—I had to write this. So BET couldn’t promote and get people to come and watch some of the best acts from Africa and had to fake or struggle with audience?

Sarkodie alone is selling out at events back home so at least the biggest current rapper in Ghana should be treated with the respect he deserves. Then again, before he got on that stage he said “this is our time Africa”. Really?

The sad thing is these artists will turn up next year and be disrespected by BET all in the name of moving forward. Ice Prince got on stage last year and thanked Akon for helping afro beats…REALLY?

No wonder all our actors and actresses all dream about Hollywood and not to make better movies back home. Is sad to see our artistes, especially the good ones being taken for granted and not being treated with the same respect that other artistes enjoy on the international stage—but they seem not to see anything wrong with it.

Well in line with the mediocrity that African acts want, maybe in the year 2020 they will finally be able to perform on stage at the BET awards, receive their awards on the main stage and they will post it online as if that is the greatest achievement.

  4. Africans are not ready to learn. We don’t want to accept that these people do not care about us. We feel we need their awards to be HIGH. They don’t care ooo tom. Stop wasting your time because they will not put you before theirs. You sit back home and put foreigners before your people, they will not do that

  5. Gooosh africans and their ungratefulness. Most of these categories are not awarded on stage, what in hell do u want from BET?? BET tried even. International act UK was even awarded backstage,I don’t see people from UK at war with BET,Africa be grateful and shut the fuck up cos this whining is becoming annoying everytime. KKD please if ur reading this, advice BET to pull that category out. Not by force to award ppl who are unappreciative. Shit some of the awards beyonce won were not even presented on stage and u think they’ll do that for u?? How in hell do our music and artists contribute to the success of BET??? Even our very own music awards that we host here are nothing close to what BET does,u think Americans go on YouTube and sees that mess we call award shows and will take us serious?? KKD has already elaborated on what the issue is,now take that inro ur head and keep it moving cos this is becoming old. The solution to this problem is for BET to pull that category out PERIOD,not worth their reputation as a television station if we africans won’t appreciate that little effort. And oh,one more thing…..the only thing we have in common with African Americans is our skin color, nothing else. I repeat ‘NOTHING ELSE'(atleast thats what they think) so stop thinking they owe us something, they don’t owe us shatz!! And to think u wanna boycott them,ur going to boycott BET?? Do u know how far BET has come?? Do u know the struggles for BET to be at where they at?? Have u heard of real artiste having gone so much just to be recognised?? Africa humble urself and at the right time,BET might reward u on stage and that might be 20yrs to come. maybe not at the time of ur davidos sarkodies and tiwas but to real artiste who aren’t even born yet.
