The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has started reacting to controversies surrounding beauty pageants in the industry, by striking on one pageant named, Miss Supranational which is fraught with a number of scandalous issues.
Miss Supranational Ghana is a beauty pageant with a mission of raising role models with a module of “Beauty with Talent and not Beauty with Sex.” It showcases talents, cultural heritage and rich tourism potentials to the world and attracts tourists from all over the world. It sends representatives to the Miss Supranational pageant.
Though the pageant is a good initiative, it is fraught with a number of scandalous issues. Investigation by GhanaCelebrities.Com revealed the following about the pageant: first, the organizers collected phones belonging to the contestants but all the phones got lost. Though the contestants have continuously demanded for their phones, the organizers have paid deaf ears.
Secondly, they used the name – Ministry of Tourism as one of their supporters of the pageant without the ministry’s notice or approval. Thirdly, the organizers do not permit the contestants who are being housed to attend church service on Sundays which is a big worry to the latter.
Fourthly, the security of the contestants who are housed in a hotel in Weija is not fully assured because the hotel has no security guard at post.
Fifthly, the contestants are very pessimistic of receiving their price package because the organizers keep complaining of money constraints every short while to them.
Sixthly, the contestants are mostly served rice and stew but though they’ve complained about being fed upwith it, the organizers claimthat rice is what they can afford so the contestants should make do with that. Contestants, who fail to eat rice, always use their own money to get other food of their choice as well as buy other basic necessities with their own monies. Rice from Lele Company is what they usually eat because Lele is one of the sponsors of the pageant.
Seventhly, the organizers have not signed an official contractual agreement with any of the contestants – the contestants only picked forms and filled their details. Also, television station Viasat 1 is one of the sponsors of the pageant but they have refused to show all ad commercials or jingles of the pageant due to issues with the organizers.
Lastly, the contestants are housed in the house at all times – the organizers do not take them out for recreational activities or do any external things to have exposure and learn from. GhanaCelebrities.Com presented our findings to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts for their attention and reactions.
The Minister of the ministry, Mrs. Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, therefore tasked the PRO of the ministry, Mr. Prince Boakye-Boateng, to call in on the office of the organizers of the pageant to confirm the truth or otherwise of our findings. Mr. Boakye visited the organizers unannounced on Saturday, 9th August, 2014.
According to our source, the meeting between Mr. Boakye and the organizers lasted almost 8 hours. GhanaCelebrities.Com contacted Mr. Boakye for feedback and he said “all your allegations were confirmed by the organizers – though they gave lengthy explanations to some of them.”
Asked what action the ministry will take, Mr. Boakye said the ministry has given the organizers an ultimatum to provide some official explanations and documents – if the organizers fail, the ministry shall issue an official communiqué to distance ourselves from it” Mr. Boakye confidently told GhanaCelebrities.Com.
