By now the shambles that was Brazil 2014 is little more than distant memory for most Ghanaians, as countless problems crop up every single day to replace the old ones and keep you too busy to care about such frivolities.
Yet the fallout from the tournament continues to rock the world of Ghanaians, as the Presidential Commission set up attempts to unravel what exactly happened that made things go so awry during those wild four weeks in Brazil.
One man at the centre of it all is Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Minister of Youth and Sports during the period in question and now a Minister of State at the Presidency. He appeared before the Commission today, armed with a power point presentation to make clear his entire testimony before the commission.
Amongst several revelations, most of which paint the government in a bad light whether wittingly or unwittingly, Elvis mentioned that the celebrities who travelled to Brazil as ambassadors on the request of the government, made $200 as their daily stipend, or per diem.
There was a huge uproar over the selection of these so-called ambassadors to travel to Brazil, as it was never made explicitly clear what exactly their role was supposed to be. Now this revelation from Elvis would certainly lead to more public outcry, as the per diem figures for the celebrities exceed that of the players, those who were actually there to play football and represent the country.
The players made $100 as per diem, which as you would notice is half what our esteemed ‘ambassadors’ made just for being in Brazil doing nothing.
The Minister had a bag full of revelations for the committee, including how those who travelled exceeded those budgeted for, and that the Presidential Ball held for all stakeholders before the tournament commenced cost as much as Ghc 100, 000.
In total, Ghana spent just a little over Ghc 4 million on everything related to Brazil 2014. Did you also know there was a website and app developed exclusively for Brazil 2014? It cost a cool Ghc 22, 857.
The committee continues sitting as they attempt to unravel the world cup fiasco and just how much it cost us the taxpayers just for our players having the nerve to qualify for the world cup.
I guess they are yet to reveal how and why these “ambassadors” were picked, and paid for doing absolutely nothing. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were actually picked because they helped certain ministers and MPs campaign, or some of them are are dating these ministers.
