Ghanaians were pretty much shocked when news broke of the assault on a Graphic journalist by Baffour Gyan and a group of thugs, apparently angered by a question the journalist posed to Asamoah Gyan at a press conference the day before.

The Graphic reporter, Daniel Kenu, asked Asamoah about his position on rumours regarding his “involvement” in the Castro disappearance saga. The Stars skipper was quite furious over the question, and whilst he didn’t answer the assault of the journalist occurred the very next day.

Baffour Gyan and Samuel Anim Addo, Asamoah Gyan’s manager, were both arrested in connection to the case: and earlier today were granted bail by the Kumasi Circuit court hearing the case- the two are facing two counts of assault.

Reports indicate lawyers for the accused are seeking an out of court settlement, thus aside pleading with the judge for bail for their clients, also requested an adjournment of proceedings for the parties involved to work towards an amicable settlement.

The judge granted both pleas, issuing bail to Baffour Gyan and Anim Addo in the sum of GHc 30, 000 with two sureties. Proceedings were also adjourned until this Friday, September 12, 2014.

The Prosecution, led by Superintendent of Police Emmanuel Akonnor, objected to both the bail and adjournment, but their plea fell on deaf ears, as the presiding Judge Mr William Boampong, upheld the pleas of the defence.

So Asamoah Gyan and his entourage have until Friday, to prove to the court that their attempted out of court settlement is progressing, for the judge to decide whether to grant another adjournment or start hearing the case of both sides.

Whilst the out of court settlement is a legitimate option, and you cannot begrudge the reporter for hearing them out; I kind of wish for once some idiot who believes he’s above the law actually pay for their crimes, and not be able to buy their way out due to their copious wealth.

The flagrant disregard for the rule of law and press freedom, two of the foremost pillars of any civilised society; exhibited by Baffour Gyan and his thugs in this case is astonishing, and personally I wouldn’t mind a little payback from society to these ‘esteemed’ individuals who really should know better.

And the timing of the incident, of course, raises legitimate questions over whether the Black Stars captain had any involvement in the attack? That obviously is virtually unprovable, but that would in no way discourage rampant speculation.

So we wait for Friday and see how the case develops, and as always GhanaCelebrities.com would keep you updated every step of the way.
