If Ebola hasn’t given you a scare yet, you probably live on the sea.

Given how Mali also reported its first case of Ebola yesterday, Ebola is no longer a West African peculiarity. It is ravaging countries faster than other epidemics.

Craig Spencer, a doctor in New York City, is sick with Ebola. The New York Times reports.

Doctor Spencer recently returned from treating patients in Guinea and tested positive for Ebola yesterday becoming the first person in the city to test positive for Ebola.

He was diagnosed and he is presently in isolation at Bellevue hospital centre.

Doctor Spencer has been deeply involved with treating the disease in Africa and his symptoms were not much of a surprise. It however put authorities on alert. New York has been ready to tackle any traces of the disease although they have hoped it doesn’t show up. Given the crowded nature of the city it could possibly pose a major threat if not quickly contained.

Contact tracing on Doctor Spencer is being rapidly done as a few people including his fiancée have already been quarantined as they are believed to have been in closer contact with him.

Ebola cannot be transmitted until symptoms are showing so authorities are not too alarmed about how many people he was in contact with prior to his symptoms showing.
