Despite Nigeria Being EBOLA Free, a Security Guard in UK Who Returned from a Holiday in Nigeria Has Been Banned From Work by Employer for Fear of Having EBOLA

Letter to Sam

This is beyond ridiculous—and the way people seem to be grouping all Africans as having Ebola has become totally offensive, to the extent that some Africans have even lost their jobs in America over this…

In the UK, a security guard who returned from a holiday in Nigeria was shocked to find he had been banned from work because his employer fears he has Ebola.

This comes at a time when Nigeria has been declared as Ebola free by the World Health Organisation.

The security guard-Sam Ayodele Ogunnoiki, 46, from St Austell, Cornwall is reported to have come back from a three week holiday on Saturday to find a letter from his boss saying several members of staff had raised concerns about working with him following his trip.

Sam Ayodele Ogunnoiki has worked with Stout Security LTD for eight years and yet, the director of the company-Trevor Mannell told him in a letter that he cannot work with the company until he had been back in the UK for 3 weeks—and that his colleagues have expressed fear and concern, unwilling to work with him because he may be carrying the deadly Ebola virus.

What a shock! Surely the Employment Tribunal will have something to say in his favour about this…

  1. He should report the matter to the labor board and then sue the damn company for unlawful termination. This is bullshit!

  3. This is only a precautionary measure. He was not fired. He was told to stay away for 3 weeks. What is wrong with that? Considering how untruthful some of the Africans have been regarding this disease, I completely understand their concerns. I am sure a Nigerian or an African employer would have done worse. Everybody should take a chill pill. When Africans are dying because the infected Africans are not telling the truth and going about infecting others why should somebody risk their lives for this? Would any of you be at peace if your co-worker recently returned from Liberia or Guinea? Yes Ebola is in Nigeria too.

    • You mean Ebola was in Nigeria right? FYI, Nigeria is now Ebola free. It doesn’t make sense to quarantine or prohibit someone from resuming their post especially if that person is asymptomatic. You may argue that, they’re only taking precautionary measures to protect the other workers but in the same vein medical scientist has proven that a person only becomes contagious if  they developed symptoms, in this case, he is not. He is outright being discriminated against and he has the right to sue.

      • Do you believe Nigerian authorities? I don’t. Would you take a letter of credit from Nigeria? I won’t. If they tell you Nigeria is ebola free and you believe them then you are taking a big risk. the 419 country cannot tell the truth if it smacks them in the face. According to the Nigerian authorities, book haram is on the ran. Do you believe that too? It’s your prerogative to believe a Nigerian but the manager doesn’t have to believe them and he has every right to protect his employees. Why should he risk his business and the lives of his employees for one inconsiderate security man? Security is not rocket science and I am certain security men are a dime a dozen. He’s not being discriminated against. He should have had the sense to stay at home out of consideration for his fellow workers. I am sure this same person would have any problems staying away from a n HIV positive worker.
