MUST READ: Personality And Character | There’s A Difference!

We love to put across a very ‘good’ personality but this may not always be the same as those which represent our true and consistent character. We unfold ourselves with time and under different circumstances – in anger/ happiness/lack/plenty. We most often tend to get impressed by a person’s personality more so than we do character.

When such people misbehave (unacceptably), we defend them based on their personality and not their character.  We don’t need good values and moral qualities to be funny, charming, impeccable speaker and popular – ask some of the famous people of this world whose reputations are in stark contrast to what they get up to behind closed doors (and washrooms). A person could be incredibly intelligent but lack morals. Some people have good personality with good character; others have great personality with bad character

‘He/she can’t do that’, ‘this sweet looking person’ is how we quickly judge and defend people when their true colours show. A person’s personality stays with them and when they’re playacting at being of a certain character – they gradually show signs of it if we listen and watch. It’s difficult and suffocating wearing a mask for a long time – it’ll fall off with time (long or short).

We can trim and change what we’re putting across to suit our audience; we tend to amaze because we put our best self and foot forward. A person can have personalities which score them good points anywhere and everywhere they go – job interviews, meeting people for the first time etc. and we tag them ‘great personality’.

Some of us mistake people’s personality for character, which are not the same thing. There is a difference between personality and character. We can all pretend to have catchy personality and character. Someone can have a great personality but their character may not be anywhere good… When the person starts showing some ‘disturbing behaviours’, we starts wondering where the sweet and amazing person is. Take con men for example, they’re very funny and sweet when around you but….

There’s more to a person other than the sweet, charming smile we see. We shouldn’t take decisions and conclude based on packaging without the contents to back it up. My character is what I conceal ‘indoors’ not what I present ‘outdoors’! Too many people publicly praise a person they really don’t know and they are very quick to vouch and stick their neck out because they ‘think’ not what they know. ‘I know’ and ‘I think’ are two different things.

A person’s Character really expresses itself through vulnerability! If I’m a charming, sweet, likeable person (that’s my personality) and you leave your wallet full of cash and I steal it (character) – refuse to believe I’m a thief because I’m sweet and ‘don’t look like that’.

Don’t get it twisted. There are good people and good-plated people!
