If you’re even remotely familiar with Islamic Sharia law this would not really come as a surprise to you, as it is one of the sources of the most brutal and inexplicable laws that any group of people willingly subject themselves to.

Religion propagates many vices that any civilised society would not indulge in. The Christian god is a misogynistic, genocidal maniac; Islam’s Allah is not much different. The oppression and degradation of women in the supposed holy texts is troubling, and whilst Christianity has somewhat moved from that (it’s more subtle now), adherents to Islam’s Sharia law remain stuck in the backwards mentality imposed by their religion.

Read this story and I dare you to come up with a different conclusion. A 19 year old Saudi woman who was gang raped by 7 men back in 2006, has been sentenced to 200 lashes and six months in jail for ‘indecency and speaking to the press’.

The original incident occurred when whilst in a car with a male friend, a man accosted them and drove them to secluded area. There, she was raped by 7 men whilst her friend was physically attacked.

After being raped by 7 men, she was sentenced to 90 lashes for being in the car of a strange man. Saudi law dictates that a woman be accompanied at all times by a male family member when in public.

Her appeal has led to the latest sentence, with the lashes extended to 200 and a six month jail term. The men who raped her received light sentences, with the highest being a five year jail term.

Through the appeals process her lawyer encountered several difficulties. He contacted the media as a result, and has since lost his licence, and been summoned to a disciplinary hearing.

Aside the absurdity of a law requiring a lady to be accompanied at all times, you would think getting gang raped would at the very least earn you some clemency. Here we can see the victim suffers much more than the perpetrator.

No religion with such laws deserves any woman’s worship- yet inexplicably they are often the staunchest believers.
