Disregarded Enemies That Stifle Our Reasoning and Development As Africans | Time to Free Ourselves is Either Now or Never

Africa Problems

As Africans, we need nobody to point the fact to us that we are really underdeveloped in many ways when we compare ourselves to other continents. On many occasions, we tend to blame others for our woes, thinking that would solve our problems or change the current unpleasant state we find ourselves in.

It is so uncommon for an African to accept blame for something he has done wrong. Rather, he will find any possible excuse to exonerate himself; often by shifting blame on another person. It is therefore not surprising when Africans do not accept the fact that certain actions of theirs have led them into the state of immaturity as a continent.

There’s not a single day that most Africans do not attribute their present-day poor condition to colonization (slavery). According to some, colonization by foreign countries is the prime cause that has stifle development in Africa. Interestingly, such fail to recognize that it is not only African countries that have been colonized before. Even America was once colonized (Perhaps, I should rather cite Malaysia as an example).

Barack Obama was 100% right when he said “it’s time for Africans to stop blaming colonialism and ‘western oppression’ for the continent’s manifold problems.” He further stated that “Africans are responsible for Africa”, a statement which I’m fully in support of.

It’s obvious that many Africans lack the power of reasoning. By reasoning, I mean the set of mental processes used to derive inferences from premises. Reasoning helps us to generate new knowledge and organize existing knowledge as a people. When it comes to science, problem solving, argumentation, decision making, critical, and creative thinking, one cannot do away with reasoning; but as Africans, there exist some disregarded enemies that impede our reasoning powers, which in turn do not permit us to develop as a continent.

Superstition

Science has done a lot to help human beings. One of the many accomplishments of science is the freedom some people have had from various superstitious beliefs. Superstition is common within every culture across the globe. With the help of science, most people have let go of their superstitious beliefs; allowing them to reason.

It would not be wrong to address Africa as a highly superstitious continent. For the sake of those who might not know what superstition is, this simple definition can be of help. Superstition is the irrational belief that an object, action, or circumstance not logically related to a course of event influences its outcome.

Almost anything that happens to an African is attributed to a superstitious belief. Witches are always blamed for the woes of others, including the countless accidents that occur in Africa, which happen due to the carelessness of drivers (including non-maintenance of their vehicles).

So instead of finding the real causes of problems, superstition is rather the preferred choice. How then would you solve a problem when you do not have the right cause? Not being able to solve an existing problem too means you are going to remain at ground zero with development not coming your way. It’s therefore not eccentric that ‘Africa’ has no effective solution to its perplexing problems.
