Experimental Ebola Drug Cures Monkeys- Human Trials Yet To Commence

This disease has ravaged Africa on a few occasions in the past, including last year’s most deadly outbreak- yet none of us has been bothered to try finding any antidote to it.

Researchers in the US working on a ‘cure’ for Ebola have made a breakthrough, with their work leading to the cure of monkeys who were initially infected with the virus.

Their work centred on the Makona strain, which caused the current outbreak in West Africa.

According to the BBC, three monkeys infected with the virus were all cured when the trial ended after 28 days. Three others, infected but not treated, died within nine days of the commencement of the trial.

For now though, no human trials has been conducted to test its efficacy amongst humans. The drug reportedly works by blocking particular genes, which stops the virus from its rapid replication that leads to its deadly efficacy.

Scientists also say if successful, this drug could be produced in as little as eight weeks. For now they’re calling the treatment TKM-Ebola-Guinea.

This is a different treatment to ZMapp, the first known Ebola cure which targets a different strain of the virus.
