GIANT Leap…From Bleaching Queen to ‘Dumsor’ Activist | Why We Love Yvonne Nelson

Yvonne Nelson

Today, Yvonne Nelson is the most loved and paid-attention-to Ghanaian Celebrity—and it’s all because she is speaking the mind of most Ghanaians by challenging what has become the status quo, ‘Dumsor’.

For about a week that Yvonne Nelson decided to become that one strong social media activist, calling for the end of the current power crisis with her #DumsorMustStop campaign, she has become the loving girl of Ghanaians, especially members of the opposition party.

Her activism is not political but in Ghana, ‘nothing is not political’; you will always find politics sneaking its way into whatever is placed on the table—be it religion or national issue such as the one we have on our hands.

Yvonne Nelson is using her celebrity status as a tool to call for social change and to challenge the ruling elites on behalf of ordinary Ghanaians whose voices do not go beyond their backyards—and for this reason, she stands tall as the trending Ghanaian celebrity.

Her words on social media have become golden, making headlines—when normally, she would have to pull a good stunt to get the sort of coverage is freely getting today. The people are tired and stressed and the situation doesn’t seem to be getting better so all energy has been put behind Yvonne Nelson who is rolling on like the Ghanaian version of Joan of Arc.

She is about to start a revolution; or let’s say, she has started one—with the full backing of most Ghanaians who cannot understand how they made the mistake to vote for leaders who have literally thrown them into such a mess.

I think it would have been a little bearable for most Ghanaians if there was hope—one built on the fact that the President was listening and paying attention to their cries. But having tagged himself a ‘dead goat’ and having failed several times to honour key promises on the energy crisis, Ghanaians are furious…

The frustration of Ghanaians online a week ago without a leader and the aggravation of these same people today with a champion activist-Yvonne Nelson is pretty different. Today, they have a single loud voice capable of collecting all their small voices and beaming them into a loud amplify for the various media houses to redirect them to those in charge of the nation…

For this reason, anyone who has attempted to go against the words, vision and direction of Yvonne Nelson, the self imposed Dumsor activist on the state of the nation has been slaughtered.

From John Dumelo to David Oscar, it is as though they do not have fans—with the fans and followers of Yvonne Nelson which I would say is a make up of the entire nation slamming these personalities who by wrong timing decided to contradict Yvonne Nelson’s campaign.

Social media has been interesting but the democracy on there is totally disappearing—go against #DumsorMustStop and you will be compelled to go into hiding. It’s totally insane but right because Ghanaians cannot bear the hardship anymore.

To think that this same Yvonne Nelson was at one point the most hated Ghanaian Celebrity is pretty interesting—and I am talking about the days when you wouldn’t talk about skin bleaching without hearing someone shout; YVONNE NELSON.

She has succeeded in turning around her position in the minds of many Ghanaians by picking a fair fight—by deciding to be the mouth piece of the people despite the obvious hovering political fall out and future consequences.

As a GOT fan, I think she is flying on like Khaleesi (Daenerys Targaryen), except that she has no dragons. However, she must remember what Cersei Lannister told Ned Stark, “When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.”

To switch from a bleaching queen that most people threw stones at to Joan of Arc or Khaleesi is one hell of a great achievement but she must not forget Ghanaians are best described as chameleons…
