The show that has spawned off the reality singing genre is set to be taken off air after one last run due to fledgling ratings.

FOX’s American Idol began in 2002, and aside serving as inspiration for other shows like X-Factor and The Voice also introduced many of America’s future singing greats to the limelight.

Somewhat ironically, it’s one of the shows that set out emulating Idol that’s leading to its demise. Ratings for the show have dropped, as The Voice has attracted most of the younger demographic leaving Idol out in the cold.

Next season, Season 15, has been revealed to be its last. According to TMZ

“American Idol” — once the king of all reality shows and the godfather of shows like “The Voice” and “The X Factor” — will be sent off to pasture in 2016. It was 15 seasons old. “Idol” began in 2002 and at its height averaged 30 million viewers a season”

After 2016, the show that introduced the dream team judge line-up of Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson would be no more.

Idol also launched the careers of amongst others- Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks, Adam Lambert, and Fantasia.
