New Study Shows Younger Generation of Americans Are Abandoning Religion in Droves

In Ghana, we take a lot of what we’re told literally and on faith. Often even though there comes a time that we have the ability to verify what we’ve been told independently, we choose not to do so.

Because personally I’ve found a thorough, honest evaluation of most of what you’ve learnt as part of your religious upbringing would at the very least raise some nagging questions that should lead to a lot of soul searching. However, I don’t think I’m exaggerating if I say majority of Ghanaians, of all generations, believe that the story of Adam and Eve actually happened.

Thankfully, majority of young people in the US are using the tools at their disposal to fact check the things they believe about their lives. I believe it is no coincidence that the generation with new media at their fingertips the most are the ones abandoning organised religion.

A study by the Pew Research Centre in the United States have shown that increasingly, more Americans are identifying themselves as religiously unaffiliated. The study revealed that 70.6% of the population identify as Christians, down from 78.4% in 2004.

The segment described as unaffiliated number 22.8%, up from 16.1% during the last survey. The most interesting part of the survey though as seen in its breakdown is that the younger the generation, the more likely they are to identify without any religion.

Most prominent is the generation defined as ‘millennials’, anyone born after 1980 who largely reached adulthood in a globalised, internet driven world. 36% of those describe themselves as religiously unaffiliated, which means for anyone 35 years and below there are more non-religious ones than Catholics (16%), and Protestants (32%).

It’s astounding, because 80% of these are people raised in religious homes. Which means they’re getting the indoctrination all right, but they’re learning more somewhere else and are probably shedding the skin they’re parents have prepared for them.

And where else, if not the internet.

The four horsemen often wonder if their work would really have any tangible impact, I would say maybe it has.
