Ghana’s male and female Olympic football teams where in action over the weekend as they attempted to progress in the qualifiers for Rio 2016.

The Black Queens hosted Egypt in Accra, beating the North Africans by 3 clear goals to qualify 4-1 on aggregate. The Meteors were not so lucky, losing 1-0 in Brazzaville and subsequently losing 5-4 on penalties to the Congolese.

The first leg in the Ghana-Egypt clash ended 1-1 in Cairo, giving the Queens a clear advantage provided they could capitalise on their home turf in the second leg.

And capitalise they did, pummelling the Pharaohs 3-0. Portia Boakye gave Ghana the lead, before Jane Ayieyam and Elizabeth Addo rounded up the victory.

Their male counterparts, the Black Meteors, were not so lucky. After a 1-0 first leg lead, they were unable to hold on in the return leg, losing on penalties to Claude Le Roy’s Congo.

Sylvere Ganvoula got the lone goal of the game in the 29th minute, forcing the game to the lottery of the shootouts. Whilst the Congolese converted all their kicks, Ghana missed one to get kicked out of the qualifiers.

This is the third consecutive Olympic qualifiers that the Meteors have been kicked out of, Ghana’s last appearance being at Athens in 2004.
