Yesterday the news was rife with demolition exercises and desilting of the Odaw river and more grandstanding from government- 200 bodies too late.

We’ve already hammered on the points why Alfred Vanderpuye is no best mayor, and the fact he’s still in office after most of his antics just speaks to our obliviousness to the concept of personal responsibility and accountability.

One Ghanaian living in the UK has taken it upon himself to start a petition to get the mayor kicked out of office. Addressed to the president, the petition calls for the President to get rid of his mayor who has consistently failed to act to ‘safeguard life and properties’.

The petition has 286 signatories as at now, despite being up almost two days and the outrage running over the country. It wouldn’t really change anything but it would be nice to see a lot more people supporting this.

Here’s the petition addressed to the equally culpable John Mahama…you can visit change.org to sign it.

“It’s the act of man, failure of authority to safeguard life and properties by providing proper sewerage and drainage systems. It’s become a yearly ritual and last year when it happened he failed to act. The people, who turn the drainage system into refuse dump and throw rubbish into them indiscriminately because city authority has reneged on his responsibility. Ironically he is voted as a best mayor for merely doing cosmetic renovation to the city of Accra.

Our country with all the hypes has no proper health and safety regulations. No organisations has Health and Safety Officers to police all these and the authority fails to act. Like the proverbial vulture we go to sleep after the rains and government fails to act. For seven years the Odaw River has not been dredged and the result is the catastrophe this morning. The whole of Accra has been washed away by the rains because of his ineptitude and rhetoric .The mere-so-subtle “shift the blame away from government” game being asserted is childish.

Even if the floods were caused naturally by the alleged “building on waterways” and littering, where are the marked waterways so that people don’t construct buildings on them? And were the authorities blind when the buildings were coming up? And were they impotent to pull the building down when they were constructed in the first place?

And what happened to the laws on littering? Where are the skip-bins on the side of the road for people to use? Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown and you know the ‘snake is attacked from the head. Let us face it and deal with it, and stop thinking that every incident is just another propaganda or decoy opportunity.”

LETTER TO Government of Ghana President John Mahama The mayor Accra-Ghana should be sacked in the light of the flood disaster
