The World Boxing Organisation (WBO) has stripped Floyd Mayweather of his WBO welterweight belt after the champ failed to meet some mandatory obligations.

Mayweather won the belt after beating Manny Pacquiao in the so-called ‘fight of the century’, from which he raked in around $200m for one nights work.

But he has been stripped of the belt he won in that fight by the WBO, after he failed to pay a $200,000 sanctioning fee to the organisation. The deadline for the payment was Friday, and Mayweather’s camp had made no effort to pay up.

Champions are required to pay a portion of their winnings to the organisation, and Mayweather failed to do so.

“The WBO world championship committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr Floyd Mayweather Jnr as the WBO welterweight champion of the world and vacate his title for failing to comply with our WBO regulations of world championship contests. The WBO said in a statement.

“The WBO has the utmost respect for Floyd Mayweather Jnr and all that he has accomplished during his storied career. Mr Mayweather has always agreed with and understood that world championships have both privileges and responsibilities and that status as WBO champion is subject to and conditioned on compliance with the WBO rules and regulations.”

Floyd is still unbeaten after 48 fights, and is planning a final fight this fall before retiring. He still holds the WBC welterweight and the WBA super welterweight title.
