Kenyan President Signs Polygamy Law And Nobody Is Crying Foul: Yet Legalising Homosexuality In America Gets All Of Us Up In Arms

Another example of the selective outrage religious people like to display, and the mass hypocrisy it’s rife with.

When the United States Supreme Court legalised same seks marriage, despite the entire Atlantic separating our two continents; we found the time to complain. People were on social media lambasting a decision that was bound to have very little effects on their lives, and crying about the moral debauchery engulfing the West.

Yet in our own backyard, a similar situation was arising that we cared very little about. In Kenya, President Uhuru Kenyatta has signed into law a bill that legalises polygamy. Kenyatta, a Christian, seemed unperturbed by the fact that his religion frowned upon the act of polygamy.

Irrespective of that, we haven’t heard the same level of condemnation and indignant reactions that greeted the US decision. Kenya is a Christian nation as well, who are taking an action that God is sure to frown upon, yet there has been little or no resistance; not from the people, not from religious leaders; nobody.

Maybe that’s because the bible is a contrarian mess when it comes to polygamy. Some of Judeo-Christianity’s most well known patriarchs such as David and Abraham where polygamists, even though the bible condemns it in Deuteronomy and Timothy. Further on, monogamy has become a well known tenet of modern Christianity, which has even seeped into common law with bigamy.

So if we can’t find time to fight against perceived ‘sins’ in our own backyards, where do we get off presuming to lecture a first world nation who has no time for us? Or ‘sins’ are only valid when committed by white people? Where was the outcry when Mozambique decriminalised same seks acts?

The answer, of course is that we’re all hypocrites. We do not really have Christians or Muslims, but people who follow a part of it that they happen to agree with. So people shower more vitriol on homosexuality than fornication, lying, gossiping, and polygamy; even though they’re all supposed to be equal crimes before the Lord.
