Churches are not new to ripping people off. In fact, it is my contention g that for most of them, that’s all they do, everything else is a side show. However, you would be hard pressed to find one that goes in this hard, with no attempt at subtlety.
A Florida woman is furious at her church, after they wrote her a letter telling her to pay up to a $1,000 in fees or get booted from the church. Candace Petterson received the letter from Greater Mount Moriah Primitive Baptist Church, after becoming a member not long after she moved to Tampa.
She thought everything was going well, until she received a letter from the church one day. The letter asked her to pay $50 a month, a yearly $250 anniversary fee and another $150 for Mount Moriah Day, along with other assorted fees (amounting to $1,000), simply to remain a member in good standing and vote on church matters.
To add insult to injury, they reminded her that children, including her 11 year old daughter, are expected to pay $5 a month and a $15 fee twice a year.
“In order to not be removed from the church roll, your attention to this matter [is] greatly appreciated,” the letter warned but offered to grant her a 90-day “hardship” exemption.
Unbelievable; I guess the offertory on Sundays is not enough in this modern world.. I thought the whole point of church was that you gave out of your heart. When it becomes compulsory, you might as well be paying membership fees for the tennis or golf club.
