Officers Deploy For Assembly Elections

The Ghana police service says they are ready to prevent any troubles as the District Assembly and Unit Committee elections commences today, September 1, 2015.

Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police service, Cephas Arthur, told Myjoyonline.com that “although the elections do not command the same level of seriousness as the presidential and parliamentary elections, police are poised to deal with any security breach.”

“What is important is safe guarding the integrity of the process and everything that we need to put in place to safe guard it, we are doing it”, he said.

About 2,085 police officers were deployed to oversee the assembly elections across the country.

According to Francis Abban of Joy News, over 700 security personnel are being deployed Tuesday morning across polling stations at Odorkor, a suburb of Accra.

Stats from the Electoral Commission of Ghana shows; a total of 18,938 candidates are contesting for the District Assembly, 17,785 are male and 1,102 female.

Also 43,584 candidates will be contesting for the Unit Committee Elections. Only one third of these candidates are female.

The EC says all is set for the elections which was postponed from March 3, to September 1, 2015, due to directives from the Supreme Court.

According to the EC election materials have been transported to the various district assemblies for the polls.–But I can report that voting turn out as at 9:00am in the Sunyani Municipality is very low.
