Late Wakaso Freekick Hands Ghana Crucial Win Over Rwanda In AFCON Qualifier

The Black Stars maintained their perfect start in African Cup qualifying with a last gasp 1-0 win over the Amavubi of Rwanda.

Playing on a sorry excuse for a field in the Rwandan capital, Mubarak Wakaso’s 87th minute free kick was enough to give Ghana the hard fought win.

Captain Asamoah Gyan missed the game through injury, and his teammates never played at the levels expected of the Stars. The sorry nature of the pitch must have had something to do with that as well.

Neither Richmond Boakye-Yiadom nor Jordan Ayew could successfully fill their captain’s boots in a stop start game that had zero real football on display.

Captaining the side, Andre Ayew was a live wire as always, but could create little on the potato patch of a field in Kigali.

It took the intervention of Wakaso, smashing home a free-kick three minutes from time, to hand Ghana the win. The three points keeps Ghana at the top of the group with a maximum six points from two games.

Rwanda follow with three, whilst Mozambique and Mauritius remain bottom at zero. The pair face off in their second round qualifier on Sunday.

For a match being beamed worldwide, CAF needs to do something about the pitch such a qualifier had to be played on.
