The Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) and the government of Ghana have officially declared the first Friday of every month ‘Batakari’ day.

On that day, everyone is supposed to wear the locally produced ‘Batakari’ to work and all their functions to promote the cloth, boost patronage of made in Ghana goods, and to give it a more international appeal.

The launch was carried out in Accra on Friday.

Other expectations of the project are to boost employment opportunities for, and increase the incomes of; the large number of people the ‘batakari’ industry employs.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare, who launched the Friday wear, said wearing ‘batakari’ not only gave Ghanaians a proud and unique identity, but promoted employment creation and helped to address the rural-urban drift.

She also revealed that a lot of youth up north were ready to boost production of ‘batakari’, but the rest of the country had not caught up to the trend yet.

Let’s hope this does not go the way of the national sanitation day initiative.
