Teachers who used to command a lot of respect in our society—are now involving themselves in dubious ways just like our politicians to enrich themselves. If teachers who people believe are to instigate good manners in the children that they are nurturing are now turning into thieves—then where lies the future of this country?

An audit conducted by the Fair and Salaries Commission has revealed that several teachers in Ghana have fraudulently secured salary upgrades by using fake certificates.

Chief Executive of Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Mr. Smith Graham told Joy News that the fraudulent activities of these teachers have become a cost to the state—and they would face prosecution soon.

“We don’t know how massive the situation is across the country, but at least the work that we have done proves that there are a few fake certificates and non-certificate holders who have even be upgraded to levels that you don’t expect them to be.

“The time has come that people [teachers] would have to be prosecuted,” Mr. Smith Graham said.

Detailing how the situation would be resolved in the interim, he said the teachers who got their salary upgrades using the fake documents would first have their names deleted from the payroll.

“Deletion or suspension of the names from the payroll will be done in November to ensure that nobody suffers unduly,” he said.

Mr Graham said a committee chaired by him and represented by the Ghana Education Service, Teachers unions, the Audit Service, Ministry of Finance and the Controller and Accountant General’s Department are working to ensure that deleted names can smoothly be reinstated when the need arises.

Corruption and fraudulent activities have now become a nationwide canker of which the churches are not even spared.

The dignity of the Ghanaian teacher is in limbo as they appear in the headlines lately for all the wrong reasons.
