21st Century Ghana: Police Descend On Protesting Teacher Trainees And Lash Them

police-lash-demonstators

The Ghana Police Service are doing very little to endear themselves to people these days, and that is aside the obvious fact that the word professionalism exists nowhere within their vocabulary.

Recently there was huge public outcry after they similarly roughed up demonstrators of the Let My Vote Count Alliance (LVMCA).

Teacher trainee students of the Wesley College of Education in Kumasi were this morning roughed up by police during a demonstration.

The students were protesting a new directive from the school that students referred in examinations had to pack up their belongings and go home. The students felt it was a deliberate ploy by management to get them to pay expensive school fees, and then sack them arbitrarily.

According to this Daily Graphic report, the police, for no apparent reason- descended on the students with whips and started lashing them. A lot of the students sustained bruises on different parts of their bodies.

Aside the unintended irony of teachers being lashed, this sort of behaviour from police in civilised society is strictly uncalled for. There are instances where demonstrations can go off the rails, but in Ghana it seems what would set the police off is not known to even the police themselves.

The report notes it took the intervention of some student leaders to halt the carnage, but at that point several of the students had already been injured, with marks visible all over their bodies.
