Ghanaians cannot sing ‘song of praises’ because we’ve already been told that the Karpower barge which is expected to produce about 225 megawatts power to the national grid—may not be our savoir to end dumsor.

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) has announced that the ‘decorated power barge’ which arrived at the shores of Ghana last week has now been connected to national grid.

Chief Executive of GRIDCO, Engineer William Amuna told Citi News that “we are done with the connections; we actually were done with the termination of the barge about three days ago.

We have gone through all the relay settings, the protection, testing and everything. As we indicated last week, we said within one week we should give you a deal, we are very ready now.”

“There are other things being done on the barge, the generators and other things…the manufacturers are also doing the final checks on the generators, once they are okay we will be ready to power the line and supply power to the grid,” he added.

However, energy expert Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby believes that it is a waste of time and resources to bring in the power barge at a time that the country is “no longer in an emergency situation—compared to a year ago when the deal was struck.”

“It has been one year after the events [in 2014], therefore, the terms on which Karpower was negotiated need to be re-negotiated from emergency to normal”.

“It is so expensive it doesn’t make sense to any Ghanaian,” he said on Joy Fm on October this year.

“It is not megawatts that deliver power but megawatts plus fuel…we can keep on adding megawatts but if there is no fuel to power the plants there will be no power,” he fumed.
