Quite often, not always, societies with overly repressive laws against women turn out to be Islamic societies. Yet somehow this is a taboo to talk about because they are holy people, no?

Sharia as a legal system is incredibly deranged, prescribing punishments like death for adultery and cutting off people’s hands for stealing. And often, rape victims are supposed to be stoned to death for ‘dishonouring’ their family.

A woman in Saudi Arabia was recently sentenced to death for adultery, and now another in Indonesia was caned in public. Her crime- becoming too friendly with a man who wasn’t her husband.

According to MailOnline, 20 year old Nur Elita, a university student, was punished for her friendship with a male student colleague. She was paraded outside a mosque in Banda Aceh, and administered five lashes in the full glare of a gathering crowd.

The punishment was administered based on Sharia Law, which is operative in the region. Elita had to be carried off to hospital after her ordeal.

The man was also caned, with a masked man carrying out the punishment, in the presence of the town’s deputy mayor.
