WTF: 10 Year Old Girl Held As Slave In A Shrine Because She Was Caught Defecating In Classrooms Which Have Angered The Gods

What a sophisticated and enlightened way to handle a situation involving a freaking minor!
Why do we have to keep on being encumbered to the supernatural, both ancient and modern? For the Ghanaian, the little brainpower to be used to decipher a problem is too much, so the easy explanation of the supernatural always holds appeal.
However, it leads to stupid messes like this one, all the time.
A ten year old girl is to serve in a shrine for the next thirty years, unless her parents can raise enough funds to pay the fine of 2 cows, goats and an amount of GHȼ5,000 the ‘spirits’ demand of her.
According to Adomonline, the girl has been accused of consistently defecating in a school building in the area- the Abenaso Presbyterian Primary school in the Kwaebibirem District of Eastern Region.. When the defecation caused the school to be shut down, the chief and elders contacted the town fetish priestess, who called for the culprit to be brought to her.
She was arrested by an angry mob in the town, who handed her over. The priestess then imposed the thirty year sentence on her, only to be revoked if the fine is paid.
A spokesman for the priestess told Adom Fm that the girl had confessed to being a witch, who turned into a cockroach to defecate in the classroom. Her motive for going to all these lengths to defecate- just to ensure that school remains closed forever.
I’ve never heard such a load of nonsense in my life before.
The girls’ mother, identified as Esther Gyamfua, also told the station the family is unable to raise the funds needed to buy the items.
“The priestess has warned we will all die if we don’t buy the items for sacrifice, but we don’t have the money” she said, agitatedly.
Needless to say, we live in a country with laws, which is supposed to protect everyone- which especially is supposed to protect minors. And kidnapping, slavery, or child labour, whichever you decide to use to describe this turn of events- it is as wrong as it is illegal.
This sequence of actions actually took place, with the blessings of the town’s chief and elders, and with the approval of most of the townspeople. Every day, I find a reason to be embarrassed to be Ghanaian- I think I found today’s.
