A new year starts, and the monsters who would make all our lives miserable and burn the planet if they could, continue their activities unabated.
A series of terror attacks hit the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Thursday, killing seven so far. The attacks included multiple suicide bombings as well as gunfights between the perpetrators and law enforcement.
Police believe about a dozen gunmen carried out the attacks, four of whom have been killed, as well as three civilians. They hit some of the city’s busiest precincts, including the local United Nations building.
“The local Metro TV said 14 gunmen were involved in the attack, which started around 10.30am local time (2.30am GMT).” The Guardian reports.
“Jakarta police spokesman Colonel Muhammad Iqbal said seven people including four attackers were killed, adding that the gun battle took place in a cinema housed in the same building as the Starbucks. ‘We will declare the situation secure soon,’ he said.”
Although not immediately clear which group is responsible for the bombing, police have revealed that the country has received threats in the past from the Islamic State group.
“We have previously received a threat from Islamic State that Indonesia will be the spotlight,”  spokesman Anton Charliyan told journalists.
President Joko Widodo , speaking on national Tv, condemned the action.
“We all are grieving for the fallen victims of this incident, but we also condemn the act that has disturbed the security and peace and spread terror among our people,”
The initial blasts were reported outside the Sarinah shopping centre in Jakarta, with armed police arriving soon after. Several bombings were heard across several other locations, although for the scale of the attack, somewhat thankfully- the casualties have been minimal.
