About 19 people have been killed and at least 50 injured after four suspected jihadists hit Pakistan’s Bacha Khan University in Charsadda. The attackers climbed over a wall under the thick cover of a fog and started firing indiscriminately; attacking dormitories and other areas on campus.
Reminiscent of a similar attack on a University campus in December 2014, the response was much swifter this time, with the four attackers all killed after a fierce gun battle, although they still managed to claim several lives.
Students and lecturers were believed to be amongst those dead, as well as all four attackers. Other reports put the death toll at much higher, well north of thirty.
Pakistani Premier Nawaz Shariff released a statement in view of the attacks.
“Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif is deeply grieved over the sad incident of terrorists’ attack on Bacha Khan University, Charsada, which has reportedly resulted into the loss of precious human lives and injured many others,” a statement from his office read.
“While condemning the cowardly attack of the terrorists, the Prime Minister said that those killing innocent students and citizens have no faith and religion.”
“We are determined and resolved in our commitment to wipe out the menace of terrorism from our homeland. The countless sacrifices made by our countrymen will not go in vain,”
The BBC reports that there are conflicting responses as to who carried out the attacks, with two Taliban spokespersons both acknowledging and denying responsibility for the attacks.
This attack mirrors another on a Pakistani University in Peshawar just over a year ago, which led to the deaths of 130 students, that one was carried out by the Taliban.
Quite often people misunderstand the fight against religion as an attempt by secularists to take away a means of comfort for majority of the world, or more simplemindedly as a ‘devilish’ action.
But it is furthest from that, because religion breeds unfailing devotion to dogma. One has to take on faith matters that in any other sphere of life would be considered batsh*t insane, like virgins giving birth and snakes talking to deceive women- but as a religious person you have to accept that without questioning. From there, it is a short step to accepting without question that killing people would make you a martyr before God, and possibly earn you a date with 72 virgins. It’s the same principle- unfailing, unquestioning devotion to dogma.
So the issue of religious violence would continue to plague us for a while to come- of course interspersed with other geopolitical and economic factors. Christianity has outgrown its barbaric stage, and the rest of the world waits for Islam to do so as well- if they can before they drag us all to hell with them.
