The question of the use of ‘juju’ in the Black Stars camp has reared its ugly head in recent times since a Mallam came out to allege that Rashid Sumaila caused the injury of Jerry Akaminko prior to the 2014 world cup.
Sumaila has come out to deny the allegation, but allegations of such sort are not new in the Black Stars, or in sports in Ghana, for that matter. Issues of ‘juju’ played a key role in the fiasco that was Ghana’s 2012 African cup campaign.
Now a former Black Stars player, Charles Taylor, says the issue of ‘juju’ in the camp is nothing new, and that only players who indulge in it succeed in the camp.
Speaking on Peace Fm, the former Hearts dribbling wizard claimed that players who concentrate on being god-fearing often fail, as the juju ones tend to suceed more often.
“Yes it is possible that thing is in football and most of the players do it.” He said, when asked about whether he thought its use was present in the team.
“It will be very difficult for you as a player if you don’t use it…most players who are God-fearing tend not to succeed in football because they don’t use black magic.
“This particular Black Stars team has had the same players being invited for the past five years, and it’s going to be difficult for a player to break into the team even if that player is very good.”
Charles Taylor is one player himself some consider a victim of the ‘voodoo’ curse- that is, an extremely talented player whose career just tanked. So maybe he knows what he’s talking about.
