Serena Williams failed to pick a trophy for the second straight Grand Slam, after losing the Australian Open final to German opponent Angelique Kerber.
Kerber won in three sets 6-4 3-6 6-4, taking two hours and eight minutes to consign Serena to another trophy less Slam, after she fell in the semi finals of the US Open last autumn.
This was Kerber’s first ever Grand Slam final, in comparison to Serena’s 26th, but it looked the other way round when play commenced on the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.
Kerber took the first set, before Serena rallied to tie the match by taking the second; but the German held on to nick the third and prevent Serena from matching her (Kerber’s) compatriot Steffi Graff’s record Grand Slam haul of 22.
The men’s final comes on Sunday, when Serb Novak Djokovic takes on Great Britain’s Andy Murray.
