The head of over a billion Catholics worldwide, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, officially known as Pope Francis; has joined the photo sharing social media site Instagram, becoming the first pontiff in history to do so.
Francis’ account, @Franciscus, went live around 1100 GMT Saturday. The bio of the official account informs the worldwide following of the world’s largest Christian sect that “I want to walk with you along the way of God’s mercy and tenderness.”
Unsurprisingly, the pontiff started racking up the follower count soon enough. After two hours, he had crossed 325,000 followers. As at press time, six hours after the account went live, he’s crossed 600,000 followers.
The Pope has already shared a couple photos with his new followers.
This isn’t Francis’ first social media account, he already tweets at the official handle for the Pope, @Pontifex.
