It’s kind of a party line in Ghana, and across most of the fundamentalist Christian world, to deny the validity of the scientific theory of evolution. For some reason, we have convinced ourselves that if evolution is true, the bible must be wrong, which actually is not the case.
It’s a position that relies on distortions and misinterpretations of the overwhelming scientific evidence for the theory, and some of it comes down to a fundamental misunderstanding of the word theory as used in science. For comparison, gravity is a theory.
Back to this video, this compilation by Vox looks at some parts of our body that are unmistakable proofs for the theory of evolution by natural selection. If you consider that the option the other side provides is creation, that evolution is right becomes 1000 times more likely.
Let’s look at the wisdom tooth/teeth; the enormous discomfort it brings is one I’m sure most of us have once faced. It used to be a crucial part of our dental make-up, back when we had a use for it, until we didn’t. So now that we don’t need it, the space it once occupied has been closed off. Yet every once in a while, it tries to pop its head up, despite not being useful anymore- causing that massive discomfort.
All over our bodies, there are many parts like that. You really cannot explain why God would create a creature with wisdom teeth, and then the creature evolves away from needing it, because God’s work by definition would have to be perfect. Evolution is the imperfect system via which organisms try to adapt to their environment, and it leaves its mark all over.
So the tailbone, goosebumps, and other vestigial traits are explained in this video- how they once used to be useful, but have marginally survived even though they aren’t anymore.
This is just a small portion of the massive tapestry that is Darwin’s theory. And the arrogance we display, tossing it out derisively when we know so little of science, seems quite laughable.
