Having to give a service provider ‘something’ before they would do their own jobs is pretty much a part of the culture in this country.
A recent Afrobarometer survey set out to discover how much prevalent that is, and their results are a little on the surprising side.
35% of respondents surveyed admitted that they have paid a bribe at least once to get some sort of essential service installed, such as water or electricity.
The result is one of the worst of the continent, with Ghana finishing as the sixth worst nation out of the 36 surveyed.
Liberia was the worst on the continent, whilst Botswana was the best, with no respondent from that nation admitting to ever paying a bribe.
Afrobarometer surveyed 54,000 respondents across the continent.
Surely the figure for Ghana must be higher than that. We are talking about a country where people expect to be recompensed for doing the job that government is paying them to do, and refusing to pay would just leave you frustrated, so often its easier to pay.
