The Upper East regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Adams Mahama, died in an intra party battle last year, after he was waylaid by assailants who bathed him in acid.
The attack was supposedly led by Gregory Afoko, a brother of suspended NPP Chairman Paul Afoko. Gregory is currently on trial for the murder.
The flagbearer of the party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, has released a statement on the year’s anniversary after the death. The presidential candidate called on party members to honour the death by committing for the struggle of the party to wrest Ghana from the grips of the current administration.
He also appealed for calm to allow the judicial process of holding his murderers accountable.

Today, May 20, 2016, marks the first anniversary of the tragic death of Adams Mahama, the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, who was senselessly and viciously murdered.
It was a day the NPP lost a true blue party man, and a noble adherent of its principles and values.
It is not often that the party takes someone to its collective heart so wholeheartedly, but the late Adams Mahama managed to charm most people in the party. Adams was passionate about Ghana. He was convinced that the NPP will capture power in 2016 in order to improve the lives of the people of Ghana. It is up to us to make sure that Adams did not die in vain.
The way in which we will not let his death be in vain is to rededicate ourselves to the struggle ahead, that is the struggle to redeem our country and return her to the path of progress and prosperity. When we have done this and put the smiles back on the faces of all the poor and needy people that Adams took care of, only then would we have truly “avenged” his death.
The process of seeking justice is still ongoing in the courts and I urge the family of the late Adams Mahama and aggrieved members of the party to continue to trust the judicial system to bring a just resolution to the matter.
On this day, and on behalf of the entire membership of the NPP, we pledge to continue to work to keep the Adams’ flame alight. To his widow, children, and family, we pray for Allah’s continued strength for them.
May the Almighty Allah continue to bless Adams Mahama and grant him eternal rest.
