The Africa Prosperity Report, an annual report charting prosperity on the continent, has recently been released by the London based think tank the Legatum Institute.
The report, which calculates overall prosperity by looking at factors such as governance, education and health, found that for the year under review, Ghana has the ninth worst economy on the continent among the 38 countries surveyed.
Ghana ranked ninth overall, a ranking worsened by the terrible economic performance. In the other indices like business opportunity, safety and security, education and health, Ghana ranked near the top end of the table.
South Africa were top of the rankings, followed by Botswana, Morocco and Namibia. Algeria, Tunisia, Rwanda and Senegal complete the top eight who finished ahead of Ghana, whilst Burkina Fast rounds out the top ten.
The Prosperity Index, Legatum says, “tells us that the story of human progress goes beyond economics. It tells us that for nations to flourish they must provide opportunity and freedom to their citizens. It shows how access to quality healthcare and education provides the foundations on which nations can grow. It proves that effective and transparent government empowers citizens to take control of their lives, and it shows that protection from violence and oppression, as well as strong social bonds, are crucial to a thriving society.”
Ghana’s rankings are as follows (out of 38)
Economy 30th
Entrepreneurship and Opportunity 9th
Governance 5th
Education 7th
Health 5th
Safety and Security 2nd
Personal Freedom 12th
Social Capital 25th
